Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Cleveland Metroparks Zoo News 2024

1.0 Amur Leopard Silas has arrived in Cleveland from an unknown facility, and the zoo's current 1.0 Amur Leopard Edgar will soon be leaving the zoo, as mentioned previously in the population thread.
Not on the topic of the thread, but this is my 2000th post on ZooChat!
Sylas was transferred from Utah's Hogle Zoo. He will be paired with young female Marta from the Santa Barbara Zoo.

When I spoke to a keeper yesterday at the zoo, he stated that Edgar will be going somewhere to remain a bachelor leopard as he apparently could not stand the Snow Leopards he rotated exhibits with.

The zoo has announced a new series called "Road to 150" where they will be giving construction updates, as well as animal updates, from inside The RainForest as the Primate Forest transformation occurs
Do you know what will be removed and gained with this expansion for phase 1? Also, when will it open?

2026 is when its opening. All we can saw for most likely certain with the existing RainForest is that the waterfall and front entrance area will be removed since it will no longer be a freestanding building. Other than that, who knows?

Did a short visit to Cleveland today. Here's what was new -
  • All trees have been removed from around Primate Forest, giving an incredible look at The RainForest building before they start working on it.
  • Two Amur Leopards were out. I believe they were both of the new Leopards as they seemed to be quite a bit smaller than Edgar when looking at photos.
  • Pacha the Andean Bear was a no show
  • Only saw one Golden Bellied Mangabey during my last few visits. Beginning to wonder if the other one has passed away, as they are both elderly.
  • The small gift shop at Primates, Cat, and Aquatics is being remodeled. Not sure what they’re working on.

I have a few small updates on winter projects at the CMZ - we visited on Saturday 12/7 (and we saw maybe 12 people - perfect visit):
  • The shop in the PCA has been completely redone, and they were finishing up some spackling/mudding. It's just an empty shell for now, hope it isn't just a renovated storage area
  • They brought in a smaller excavator for renovations in the old kangaroo yard, right outside the Koala Junction station
  • Wallaby Walkabout is closed down for now, with no entrance from either side. They've had guard rails up tighten the paths; we suspect it's to keep people away from the fencing and prevent harassing the swans and kangaroos

Made a very short visit today. Only saw maybe 6 other people who weren't employees so it was quite lovely to just walk around and have the zoo pretty much to myself.

Main Zoo -
  • None of the bears were out. I was a little surprised as I usually see at least the Grizzlies.
  • Seems like work in Australia is now enveloping part of the actual Walk-around and the train station.
  • Was told by a volunteer that Edger the Amur Leopard has left the zoo.
  • Can confirm the zoo still has two Mangabeys.
  • (Gorillas) Keyambe and Jameela were being absolutely adorable by wrestling and chasing each other all around, much to Mokolo's annoyance.
Primate Forest
  • The entire facade of The RainForest has been torn down and you can see the old set pieces still inside.
  • Maps and signs around the zoo have been updated to remove The RainForest and add a blurb about Primate Forest

Cleveland MZ should have a young Amur leopard breeding pair now. Male Edgar was sent on loan to Toledo (and may breed or be used for AI with one of the resident Amur leopards there).

Did a short visit today to close out the year. Nothing interesting to report on other than the work in Australia was confirmed by an employee to be a new Kangaroo barn and the fences in the Walk-around are being replaced/repaired.

Primate Forest is really picking up speed to get the entrance area of the old RainForest torn out to begin construction on the new sections. The entire glass facade is now down and the themeing has been mostly removed.

Spent 3 hours at the zoo yesterday (12/27) with the wife. Most of the animals seemed to be out as the weather got warmer.

Does anyone know what happened at the lion exhibit around 11:30am yesterday? It was blocked by employees and we saw a handful of employees carrying something large out of the exhibit. We stopped by the area again before we left around 1pm and only saw the male lion laying on the rock.

Just came here to post this from the zoo's Facebook. Serena, the female Lion, has passed away.

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is saddened to share the passing of Serena, the African lion. Serena came to Cleveland in 2012 with another female lioness, Nala, who passed in 2022. At 19 years old, Serena lived well beyond the average life expectancy for lions and was a tremendous ambassador for her species. She will be missed by all of us at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.
