Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Cleveland Metroparks Zoo News 2024

Just came here to post this from the zoo's Facebook. Serena, the female Lion, has passed away.

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is saddened to share the passing of Serena, the African lion. Serena came to Cleveland in 2012 with another female lioness, Nala, who passed in 2022. At 19 years old, Serena lived well beyond the average life expectancy for lions and was a tremendous ambassador for her species. She will be missed by all of us at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.
This means that the zoo only has one lion.

Thought I was done with Cleveland visits for the year but a change of plans, nice weather and it being free Monday persuaded me to do a shorter visit today.

Main Zoo
  • Black Howler Monkeys are now in one of the old Fossa exhibits. They may have both, as I didn't see the Fossa while I was there.
  • They now have three exhibit spaces in PC&A but the only place I saw them today was in the aquatic hall.
  • Tiger Cubs got into an adorable chase/play wrestle match over a piece of meat.
  • Got to see not one but two procedures being done in the zoo hospital. A Cheetah when I arrived and what I believe is a Budgie when I was on my way out.
  • Meerkats have returned to their outdoor exhibit.
  • Doc the Lion was a no show despite the nice weather.

Primate Forest
  • Demolition looks to be at the same point as last time.
  • Land flattening is beginning where the trail leading up to the building was.
  • Lots of activity in the where the aluminum plant was.

(Anyone remember where that mural was? I can't remember ever seeing it)

The Pictures of the PCA Building clearly show that a renovation and rebuild is long overdue. I am sure the new building will be a huge improvement and will set up Cleveland MZ up for the next decades to come!
PC&A has been getting minor refreshes and new climbing structures for the primate exhibits. The aquatics hall could use a refresh, but I can imagine making any major changes is more difficult due to the fish. It'll certainly be interesting to see what the future holds for it, especially with the Cheetah exhibit expansion and the Tortoises and Gorillas moving down to Primate Forest.

PC&A has always fascinated me -- whether it is a good or bad zoo building, it cannot be denied it is unique, and I've always heard people cite the tortoise-cheetah are as a highlight for seeing the fastest and slowest animals in close proximity. It's great for the animals that the zoo is finally improving these exhibits but it's also a bit of a loss to the zoo's character and history.

I'm considering Cleveland for a visit in 2025, so perhaps I'll still see it.

Like I've said I think PC&A is in kind of a weird limbo with the Gorillas about to move out and the Cheetahs about to expand. If you visit Id recommend not skipping PC&A due to the large collection of Primates and of course the Gorillas are always worth a watch with the three kids running loose
