Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Cleveland Metroparks Zoo News 2025

It seems Toledo receives all the Tasmanian Devils from Australia and they then distribute them to other zoos throughout the country. I find it strange that Toledo of all zoos has one of the best programs for Tasmanian Devils.
They don't. The devils were imported in a joint import, so it's easier to all fly them in to the same location and then have the others disperse from there.

Notes from today's visit-

Main Zoo
  • Saw both mangabeys for the first time in a while.
  • Heard from a volunteer that the zoo now only has 4 Mexican gray wolves. One of the females was transferred to another zoo for breeding.
  • V the black bear and Onion the seal were no shows. If they're not back on my next visit I'll ask an employee about them.
  • The kangaroo barn behind the train station is signed for western grey kangaroos.
  • Wooly Bill is still broken. Talked to an employee walking out of the tree and they said they don’t know if he’ll be coming back anytime soon.
  • Repaving in the entrance plaza is finished.

Primate Forest
  • Heard from an employee that phase I is aiming for a summer 2026 opening at the earliest.
  • Concrete walls are starting to go up in the front area.
  • Unless you park in the Lion lot, you won't get a true sense for how large Primate Forest is going to be, as the site is much wider on the Lion lot side. I was surprised how far out the fences stretch into the parking lot.

Did a short visit today, only visiting PCA, Wilderness Trek, and elephants.

Main Zoo
  • White Headed Buffalo Weavers are now in the small exhibit at the base of the Giraffe hill.
  • Moon Jellies are still off exhibit.
  • Asian Lantern fest props are being set up in the hay barn parking lot.
  • There are now Crested Guineafowl and Von Der Decken's Hornbill in the aviary at Elephant Crossing.
  • Food court is only accessible from the Lion exhibit due to the front plaza re-paving.
  • Snow leopards and Andean bears were no shows.
Primate Forest
Not too much new to report, but the concrete forms are now visible over the construction walls. The last directional sign for The RainForest by the entrance plaza has been removed as well. 20250519_120415.jpg 20250519_120541.jpg

Went to Cleveland today.

Main Zoo
  • All the “rarer” animals (Ruskin the Red Panda, V the black bear, and Onion the harbor seal) were out today.
  • Rode the Eagle Zip for the first time today. It’s a very fun ride and worth $9, in my opinion.
  • Koalas and animals at PCA have access to their outdoor exhibits.
  • Aldabra tortoises are still behind the scenes. I wonder if they’re going to be brought out all this summer.
  • Asked an employee if he knew which Rhino was pregnant, but he just said he didn’t know and that the zoo will probably announce it soon.
  • Dingos were a no-show.
Primate Forest
  • Construction is moving along quickly now that it’s nicer out.
  • The former entrance to the lower forest is boarded over.

The zoo has shared a look at the Asian small clawed otters behind the scenes in the animal hospital. This brings the roster of animals from The RainForest confirmed to be staying/returning to:

• Bornean Orangutan (Will still have access to the dome exhibit)
• Gharial
• Burmese Python
• Capybara
• Binturong
• Asian Small Clawed Otter.

It'll be interesting to see who else is returning.

Took a visit to the zoo on Saturday

• Wild Fries hut is demolished and now seating for the food trucks across the path.
• Leopard Tortoise was off exhibit
• Azizi and Forrest were very interested in each through the fence, so assume Azizi is the pregnant one, just a guess though.
•Sergei is still separated from mom and sister so I expect a move happening soon.
•Grizzly Bear exhibit had their pool actively being filled up for the summer.
•Shiva and Suhani were not outside, but I was only about 60 degrees.
Wooden floor of the giraffe viewing was redone and now the model of the baby giraffe where you could compare yourself to it is now gone.
• Kangaroo building looks near completion.
• Meerkats off exhibit
• Howler Monkeys now occupy one of the old fossa exhibits and the left large primate habitat across from the aquatics.

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo on Instagram: "Summer is near! Visit the Zoo’s oldest residents, aldabra #tortoises Tom & Terry, who are now at their summertime home near the Primate, Cat & Aquatics building. #FutureForWildlife"
I haven't seen the Leopard Tortoise for a while so I wonder if they even still have the species. Howlers, Muellers Gibbons, and spider monkeys have been moving exhibits alot recently.
Speaking about tortoises the zoos Aldabra tortoises are out for the summer!
