Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Cleveland Metroparks Zoo

When is the exhibit due to open?

There is not a set opening date, but they say the elephants are returning in May, so most likely it will open late May/early June. I wish I had a camera to take pictures of the site because it's looking really good. The pools are basically finished along with several viewing areas, and parts of the African village. They have also started to plant around the perimeter of the enclosures. Overall it looks really good so far, and its a very decent size judging from the perimeter of the fence.

When is the exhibit due to open?

Actually, I went to the zoo today and talked with the large mammal curator and he told me the exhibit is due to open May 5th, and that our elephants should be back in Cleveland by November as the new building will be finished by then. We're also due to receive Willy, a 32 year old bull, currently living at DAK, and Tamani, a 5 year old bull, currently living at the Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa. We aren't suppose to receive Tamani until after the exhibit opens.

Thanks for the details BlackRhino, will Willy and Tamani live togehter as a bachelor group or keep them seperated.

Oh I love they will have sand floors! Seneca Park Zoo borrowed the idea when one of their elephant keepers visited a zoo I believe in Dublin. I think it's a nice feature for the elephants and I also like that they have heated floors. I look forward to seeing the original herd in a couple weeks when I go to Columbus Zoo.

Edited because I didn't read the above message correctly. Well, I'm glad zoos are following in this direction.

Considering that they kept the shell of the old building it sure looks nothing like it used to should be an awesome exhibit.

Bonnie and I were at the Cleveland Zoo today and got our first look at the baby bontebok. We also talked at length with a primate keeper who seems to think that a new primate facility its next on the zoos agenda after Elephant Crossing opens. The only problem is that things are only in the planning stages and could be a considerable amount of time before anything is even started. In the meantime we are going to be acquiring crowned lemurs which we are excited about. The only other places I've ever seen them at are Cincinnatti and Duke University Lemur Center.By the way if you are into lemurs I highly recommend DULC best place outside of Madagascar to see a huge variety of lemurs.

Today I finished uploading a comprehensive photograph journey of the Cleveland Zoo, and there are now over 500 photos of that zoo in the gallery. I wanted to acknowledge that fact, as there has been 2,000-3,000 new photos added to ZooChat during the past handful of days and I didn't want Cleveland getting lost in the mix.:)

Grizzly bear at Cleveland Zoo dies

I felt almost guilty when I read this because I had the oddest feeling with the two animal deaths at the other Ohio zoos, that Cleveland Zoo would have one to make it the third. So it is true...death comes in 3's. :-(

I believe Disney is moving Bulwagi and Willie out because their herd has expanded for the second time. With Moyo's calf Tsavo in 08, Donna's calf Luna this year, and Vasha's calf next year. Leaving Maclain, Tsavo, and Tufani the three remaining males.
