CLOSE these zoos!

I wouldn't mind seeing a facility in Bandon OR closing. I made the mistake of visiting the place in..08 I think. Most of the exhibits were tiny and over crowded, hardly any grass, no enrichment at all, rarely was there any platforms or cover (not sure about areas leading to off exhibit spaces), peacocks everywhere, random hoofstock, mostly goats overran the zoo and it looked really unhealthy. Their biggest pull is that you get to go in and pet a baby wild cat, leopard, lion, tiger or others, but I've never gotten an answer of where the cubs end up when they get too old to be handled by the general public. I doubt they have enough room to keep all of the cubs.
The getting to pet a cub thing is a double edge sword. You'll have some people who will feel really connected to the cat, and want to do something to save the species and then you may have others who will WANT that cat as a pet (others will do nothing other than come away with a once in a lifetime experience). I didn't see any educational signs (other than what species I was looking at) nor did I see anything that mentioned them helping to save wildlife.

I can see it being a problem if goats overran the zoo, but what's wrong with peacocks?

Man, people are really missing the point of why Zooplantman started this topic.

that's what I was thinking earlier. I thought the first few posts were totally in line with what I thought the thread was supposed to be about, then there was someone who (in my opinion) completely missed the seed of the thread, and then it turned into "these zoos should be closed". However, the last line in the initial post was "What is your list of zoos that, if they cannot be renovated, should just go?" so I guess the latter posters are taking the thread title and that last line and going with that. And I guess it can't be said that they're missing the point after all, because that is part of what the thread asked.

Certainly true. I might have done better to limit my thread to one more focused question.
Listing abominable roadside zoos to close is not really what I am interest in from Zoochatters.

I think Snowleopard, Drew and others have tried to respons to my point.

Thankfully the two horrendous zoos in my state of Arizona that needed to be closed have both been closed - Payson Zoo and Douglas Wildlife Zoo. I am sure there are others just as bad that need to be shut down in other states. Not all zoos can be mega zoos and I have no problem with small zoos with nice low budget exhibits that utilize existing landscape (Wildlife West in New Mexico is a great example). But some zoos are so bad that closing is the best option. The conditions are so bad that it proves the owners do not really care about animals or they would never allow it. Thankfully, the public is less tolerant of these and they are closing, just like the two Arizona facilities I mentioned.
I'd never been to the Douglas Wildlife Zoo, but my family visited the Payson Zoo once when I was, like, 10 or 12. I remember many of the animals having names from Wallace & Ladmo and the horribly small cages they were in. At the time I didn't know better so it was just another zoo to me. Looking back now, I realize that place never should've been allowed to even exist!
