I wouldn't mind seeing a facility in Bandon OR closing. I made the mistake of visiting the place in..08 I think. Most of the exhibits were tiny and over crowded, hardly any grass, no enrichment at all, rarely was there any platforms or cover (not sure about areas leading to off exhibit spaces), peacocks everywhere, random hoofstock, mostly goats overran the zoo and it looked really unhealthy. Their biggest pull is that you get to go in and pet a baby wild cat, leopard, lion, tiger or others, but I've never gotten an answer of where the cubs end up when they get too old to be handled by the general public. I doubt they have enough room to keep all of the cubs.
The getting to pet a cub thing is a double edge sword. You'll have some people who will feel really connected to the cat, and want to do something to save the species and then you may have others who will WANT that cat as a pet (others will do nothing other than come away with a once in a lifetime experience). I didn't see any educational signs (other than what species I was looking at) nor did I see anything that mentioned them helping to save wildlife.
I can see it being a problem if goats overran the zoo, but what's wrong with peacocks?
