Smithsonian National Zoo Clouded Leopard cubs

They have done very well with this species, good news

Actually, the whole discussion and media PR should be around the Thailand clouded leopard programme ... which has really made the difference!

I have a lingering hope that sometime ... PL will find their way to K.K. in Thailand (+ Angkor in Cambodia) too and bring in some new blood for the EEP.

It would be very useful for the EEP to import some of the Thai born cloudies . The protocal that seems to work at Howletts is to let the parents rear the cubs but then make up pairs and move them on to new homes when still quite young - certainly well under one year old . They are able to do this as several pairs breed annually .

Talking to the staff at Howletts in the past , there was frustration at a total lack of co-operation in terms of a willingness to make exchanges with SSP collections . They did manage to import a female from Japan which has bred .

According to the zoo's Flickr page, another cub was born to the same pair that had the two cubs earlier this year.

Good news about what National Zoo and Nashville Zoo are doing breeding Neofelis nebulosa from Thailand. I enjoyed photographing Nashville's cubs last Fall. Now, if someone would just import some Neofelis diardii for me to photograph...
