I have been traveling alot lately, so i had not been able to update on this strange situation.
The club de animalitos situation has turned into a real life telenovela, confusing and bizarre.
Well this place is owned by a mexican congressman with ties to former presidents vicente fox and felipe calderon. he is amember of the conservative party,Partido de Accion Nacional or PAN, currently out of favor. Well after Profepa, the mexican enviromental agency, closed club de animalitos, the owner went to the press to say that his private zoo was being closed for political reasons. he organized public marches asking to have the place reopenend. he said that africam safari wanted to take away the animals he loved so much. Then after, his pals in the puebla state government donated a plot of land in Tehuacan so the club de animalitos could be rebuilt there. Then Profepa decided to give the owner a two year period to rebuild the collection at the new site, but that club de animalitos would not reopen in the current site. This is an election year in mexico and political connections are everything.
So where are the animals ?' it seems that they are still in the club de animalitos site. In this mess, Profepa came off badly. The animals should have been sent to Africam safari, pronto, and it should have ended there. Instead a mexican politician who mistreats animals is recieving public land to repair te damage. As Oscar winning mexican film director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu said during his acceptace speech, mexico does not deserve the despicable politicians it has.
