Colchester Zoo Colchester Zoo news 2009 #1

They are very unlikely to fall out if they get on so well... at least till Tiga matures but then it may be a different matter. At least for now it seems very successful. I'm thinking Rajang's handrearing may have something to do with his accepting a younger male so calmly- or maybe he was just lonely.

The dynamic could change however if they add another one at anytime, who knows?

Welcome to zoo chat Goretex :) Another one for the Colchester gang :) Tho we have no hope of outnumbering the Chester mob :p lol

Please feel free to share any memories of visiting Rajy with us.

Fantastic pics (as usual) Gillp think Rajy is going to be carrying round all the enclosure bark before long if he keeps rolling around so much.

My spy at the zoo informed me he had a lovely time with that pineapple and kept most of it for later in his mouth, in between showing to everyone of course :D

I think he was lonely Pertinax, although he didnt have a close 'hands on' relationship with Djambe, she was always there and gave him a bit of competition at feeding time etc. He is such a social animal be awful if they decided to now get a female to compete for attention from his new found friend! But who knows with Colchester they seem to have gone all crazy over any decisions/plans/forests!! concerning orangys

Thanks Karenzoo for that welcome.:) I do plan to share with you all on some notable previous visits (esp to Rajang) and future visits.

This forum has got me thinking on how much really of a good exhibit "Orangutan Forest" is. I will be later shareing with you more or less my own views on it.

I will also hopefully sometime soon be posting some of my best pics on here.

One interesting coincedence is that Rajang shares the same birthday as 1 of my auntes!

Hi Goretex, welcome to the Forum from me too, another mad Rajy fan!! I can't wait to share your stories, pickies, I've wanted to see photos of him developing those cheek flanges over the years if you have any??

As a matter of interest to you, if you are on Facebook Rajang has a Fan group - it's been extended to include Tiga now too. the link is: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/group.php?gid=54139853825

According to someone who was there at the mixing they got on brilliantly!

Tiga was pulling Rajangs hair and running off wanting to be chased, Lots of eye contact and they stared into each others eyes for ages also loads of arm holding by Tiga :)

Andiii have a brilliant time Friday and tell us all about it

Colchester Zoo News: Rajang and Tiga update!

Well, had a fab time shadowing the keeper but we didn't get to see the two together on either of the days we were there! :( Tiga was in the outside cave all of Thurs and finally came out Frid late afternoon - with sack on head! Rajy was inside, a little grumpy on Thurs but back to greeting his public Friday! Perhaps the ruff 'n' tumble meant they needed their space afterwards! :)

More great news in the fact that they weren't separated Thurs eve with all access points open for the 2 to go where they pleased. All went well so I think it's just a matter of them getting their routine sorted together!

So disappointing not catching them together, particularly after seeing the great photos from GillP who was there the same day but much earlier! Even more madening is the fact that we didn't set off as early as we always do so would have been there earlier if we had have done! Ahh well, Orangutan Evening next!!

Andii, what did you actually do on the keeper shadowing, and is it worth the money?

There's no female planned whilst Rajy still alive - which in my hopes is for at least 20 years! LOL. :) as it would be too stressful. He is a great ambassador for his species in raising awareness re their current plight in the wild so now Tiga is here too, let's hope the message re Palm Oil gets through to more folk and changes are made.

Thanks Goretex that would be brilliant :D Least you won't forget Rajys birthday! My nan had the same beard as Rajang :p

Glad you had a good time Andiii :D shame you didn't see them together but that the joy of visiting no two visits are the same!

Surprised Tiga was using the authentic orangutan grey cave :p must have been his natural instinct to go caving

Glad they are going to let things be now at orangutan forest! We will just have to put pressure on them to visit the garden centre now :D
