Colchester Zoo Colchester Zoo news 2010 #2

Agreed seems baffling to not want to breed from komodoes, why else have them??????:confused:

They will breed them, but as someone I know has told me this I would take a guess at a new breeding female coming in some time this year.

The Gran Canaria animals are related. Thus they require an exchange of bloodlines to set up a breeding pair. Seems a rather sensible approach and in line with the EAZA breeding programme.

So with the new Male Komodor Jana said will be arriving from Prague very shortly, the 2 sisters? they have already, they will be joined by another female. So I assume one of the sisters will be moving on or both?

Sorry I know nothing of breeding programmes :D

Like I said previously it is a shame the crocs are using half the enclosure as well as a lesser Malayan Chevrotain (obviously not in with the crocs!) in the other small section of the enclosure its a shame they can't use it fully for the Komodos now that they are obviously moving towards breeding them.

Yes both will move out eventually. The Lesser Malayan Chevrotain and the Cuban Crocs will still be there, though the Chevrotain should soon go back with the others next to the Red Pandas.

When are they going to actually start work on the new tropical exhibit near the entrance?

At last a zoo willing to fork out an effort for a very endangered croc species (only less than 2,000 left in the wild). Alas, some captives in Europe seem contaminated with hybrid C.acutus ... (the Skansen line ... allthough I do not have the full monty yet on this).

cz has loads of endangered species ranging from aardvark to zebra

I'm happy to say that Aardvarks are not an endangered species - they are rated Least Concern by the IUCN - Orycteropus afer (Aardvark, Antbear)

Similarly, Plains Zebras (IUCN doesn't consider the subspecies separately except to note that the Quagga is Extinct) are also rated Least Concern - Equus quagga (Plains Zebra, Burchell's Zebra, Common Zebra, Painted Zebra)

So while Colchester has a good number of endangered species - those two are (happily!) not among them!

Went to the zoo today ....... was very busy being a bank holiday (when will I ever learn ?)

Quite a few changes since I last went at the beginning of April:

* the 2 Binturongs are now in the Asian Otter and Silver Leaf monkey enclosure. This did mean a very good view of them as, compared to the previous enclosures, this one is far less densely planted. 1 of them was asleep in the straw at the base of the tree along with the 2 otters.

* the Red Ruffed Lemurs have swapped places with the Black and White Lemurs (??)

* the new South American Walkthrough area now has notices stating it's due to open end of June instead of end of April

* there is a single (so far as I can see) Buffy Headed Capuchin now in with the Squirrel Monkeys

* the 3 female elephants are now all back together in the near paddock (I think it was Zola who'd been in with Tembo in the far paddock until recently)

Quotes of the day

1. (inside Spirit of Africa looking down at rhinos Cynthia and Zamba in the paddock)

Child (about 9!!): Look at the elephants mum !
Mum: I don't think they're elephants - I think they're hippos.

Good grief .... how can anyone have trouble identifying an elephant ..... trunk, huge ears ....

2. (in Chimpworld)

Dad to his family while looking at the chimps: They used to have a massive one when I came before - big and orange.

I too was there today, agreed it was very busy, probably the busiest I've ever seen it!
GillP- there is only one male binturong in with the otters/langurs, there are still a pair in the heighs zone enclosure (although zones no longer exist). The lemurs have been swapped for a while now, dont know why though?
-The new lions seem fairly confident, all three were outside (see my pics in gallery).
-The south american enclosure has started to have the indoor area built.
-Caught a glimpse of the blue magpies, now offshow in one of the hornbill aviaries.
A few firsts for me:
-Saw the Blue Duiker moving, it was chasing some crows around the enclosure! :D
-At one point, there was a queue to get in the kingdom of the wild building, stretching all the way to the bottom of the ramp, never seen that before!
-I also saw a gypsy (traveller if I'm to be polite) trying to sell lucky heather near the aardvarks. Bizarre.

There were definitely two when I was there ..... one was asleep at the bottom of the tree, the other was climbing high up on the beams near to the Red Panda enclosure. When we walked past again later, one was still by the tree, and the other was asleep wedged in the corner at the bottom far right of the enclosure next to the glass ....... so I'm sure I wasn't seeing things !

And there I thought zoos existed (in part) to educate people

Do they plan to breed the Binturongs? I don't think I have ever seen a baby one?

lol at the hippo comment! Although i do find that balcony over looking the paddocks very dull and lacking in any sort of info boards, some binoculars or something to give it an update would be great. Although saying that it is our favourite coffee spot as most people seem to not notice it.

We are going on Wednesday as my partner has a tiger experience booked so it will be lovely and quiet! Although good to hear the zoo was so busy on such an awful bank holiday

Went today for a few hours.

-There were indeed two binturongs in with the otters/langurs
-Pacu are now under the bridge in Worlds Apart
-Saw all three New Lions outside
-Painting work and tree cutting being done in the Wolf Enclosure

I thought it was against the law for zoo chatters to visit on bank holidays!!:p;)

BTW have a nice time Karern wish I could come too! Even if it was rat training!:D
