Colchester Zoo Colchester Zoo news 2010 #3

When will the new walk throgh enclosure containing those south american monkeys be ready?

BTW I actually like Colchester's present wolf enclosure, if you go on the train you would get a good idea as to how large it is for them.

I went to the zoo toady. There were 9 school coaches there!! Seembed to be loads of these everywhere along with parents with niosy little children!!

Started with the amur leaopards with 1 asleep, we had lunch there and showed people where the asleep amur leaopard was during the duration.

Tiga was in the doorway of the indoor area under a sack and Rajang was close by. Most of the animals were fairly inactive oweing to the weather.

The binterong enclosure has been demolished and I think they're demolishing that whole area. But keeping the plants. They were planning a couple of animals for that area but I can only remember Lar gibbons. Meanwhile the binterongs are in with the otters and the asian short clawed otters. All these animals were actually quite active and I think the binterongs are showed off better in this enclosure I really hope they stay.

The Wilds of Asia house is being re-done to house gibbons and hornbills. I think there will also be a little area for otters but will double check that.

Visited today for about 2 hours. A few things to note:

-Red Ruffed Lemurs have swapped again with B/W ruffed lemurs. Reds are now on their original side of the bridge.
-New fencing in Goat Walkthrough (only the part near the ferrets mind)
-Chinchillas are now on their own in the main farm building with the degu being in the rat enclosure, the rats in the guinea pigs and the guinea pigs in with the chickens next to pigs.
-Old Gibbon enclosure now holding scarlet ibis, waldrapp ibis and hammerkop.
-Silva the anteater now has a spider monkey and the capuchin from the squirrel monkeys in with him.
- Epesi the giraffe was out in the paddock with all the other animals.
- Numerous Squirrel monkey births
- New South American Enclosure still unfinished but fake rock has been done and some plants were in.
- Wilds of Asia area, the binturong enclosure has completely gone and Amazon the Geofforys cat has been moved off show due to the building work.
- Still could only see one Andean Condor.
- All six wolves are doing well and were feeding well with the rest of the pack today.
-Goeldi's Monkeys were in the Golden Lion Tamarin Enclosure
- Oh and a new guide book is out.

Thats it i think.

Where will the viewing be for the red pandas once the new enclosure has been completed.

Also went to the zoo today for a quick visit.

A few notes.

- At least 20 coaches in the car park.

- Wolf cubs were all out for the feed. The pack is a large size now. Does anybody know the exact number?

- They had set up a sprinkler in the mixed African enclouser and one ostrich was sat under it for ages cooling off.

- By the Tiger enclosure i saw a dummy which had a picture of David Cameron's face on it, lol.

Went today, a few things to report.

-My suspicions hyave now been confirmed, that indeed there are sadly only three hunting dogs remaining. Hopefully some pups soon though :)
- A new male pelican arrived yesterday and can now be seen on the lake.
- The female komodo dragon who left, was Keli.
- New Essex pig sow and piglets at Familiar Friends.

Another few points from today:

-Hammerkops seem to have been totally removed from the mixed aviary near guest services, but can be seen in various other aviaries around the zoo.
-Dik Dik building has been demolished too to make way for the new asian complex, Dik Dik are currently off show.
-Seals are off show for 2-3 weeks after some specialist surgery.

Sorry forgot to mention that lol

The new male pelican was have fun harrassing the flamingos on Saturday!

What happened to the other hunting dog was it a male that is now 'missing', 2 new males then 2 new females must have lead to some problems forming a new pack?

Bugs we did not want to count the school buses on Friday we may not have gone in :) luckily we didnt get there till after lunch so didn't see many on the way round
