Colchester Zoo Colchester Zoo news 2010 #3

Also went to the zoo today.

-A lot of workmen were working on the sun bear enclosure - lots of climbing enrichment has been put in.

-The Dik Diks were in the aviary next to the guest services building, which works really real on an aesthetic level at least.

-Only saw Igor today hopefully i was being blind and Anoushka was hidding.

- As Zoo Leopard said the new South American walkthrough is finished and I guess will be opening any day now. The tamanduas are in there and I saw them for only the second time ever, however they were asleep. Their nest box is near the window with the entrance hole facing towards the window.
 
The other day Igor came over to the window nearest the tunnel exit where I was standing, it was amazing. He was watching for his keepers who were bringing him a "light snack" of what looked like either half a horse or half a deer! Anoushka is a clever lady, who hid her snack and then went over to Igor and pinched a bit of his, when she'd finished his she went back and ate hers without him watching her lol :)
Is she still going to be leaving the collection?

I am unsure if I have said about Anoushka elsewhere, but I cannot talk about her situation on here.
 
On Colchester Zoo's facebook page:

"Dende our Amur Leopard is due to move to the Rutland Falconry and Owl Centre in September. They have off show facilities for big cats no longer playing an active role in breeding programmes and the transfer has studbook approval. The keepers have visited the premises already and are happy with his new accommodation but he is going to be very much missed at Colchester.

All the animals from RSCC are settling in well and we will keep you posted on any other new arrivals including the sun bears."

Exciting times at the zoo. I wonder what else the zoo has their eyes on at the RSCC?

Could the seal pool be a new home for the otters?! (The asians or RSCC Smooth coated)

Sad they are moving him on, hope the old boy doesnt get overly stressed and pop his clogs (or flippers!:)) in transport. As said at least he is going to a good home to live out the rest of his days.
 
The seal relocating to the wildlife center is a good thing after loosing his mate. In addition, it will free up space for introducing another water based mammalian species. Either Asian small-clawed, smooth-coated or giant otters would I suppose be feasible (whichever fits the zoo-geographical siting of the seal pool at Colchester).

Any new Amur leopard coming in after relocation of the over-represented old individual? :confused:
 
This is great news its about time they did something with the seals. I just say "lets knock the old pool down!!"

I'm glad he's fineally moving over to a decent pool.
 
A few notes from today:

-The Montserrat Oriole are now in with the Victoria Crowned Pigeons.
-South American Walkthrough still hasn't opened but I hope it happens soon!
-Kirks Dik Dik are in with the Curlew, Von Der Decken's Hornbill, Swamphen Aviary.
-White Nosed Coati now in with Silva the Giant Anteater on Hornbill Hill.
-Squirrel Monkeys now in old Coati enclosure next to Chimps.

Thats all I can think of at the moment...
 
I visited Colchester zoo 2 days ago. Not a great deal to report but their now pretty much complete with sun bear enclosure. I got great viws of the 2-toed-sloath. I saw the red-faced-saki-minkeys. I also saw Talia do some swinging by herself which I was pleased to see her do.:)
