Colchester Zoo Colchester Zoo news 2010 #3

I love the red-backed Sakis. Talia is turning into a very independent little girl, it's lovely to watch her swinging and climbing around the enclosure :) I see loads of changes (good changes) in her every week :)

I'm going tomorrow before I return to work at the end of the week!

Any new Amur leopard coming in after relocation of the over-represented old individual?

Dende isn't that old. He came from Berlin Tierpark in 2005 but was castrated in 2009 due to a heart murmur and the fact that he was born with only one testicle which the studbook holder feared may be passed onto any cubs he sires.

All the best to him and Babyface in there new homes :)

On Colchester Zoo's Facebook page, in response to a question about the hyaenas, it says:

"We are waiting to move the striped hyena to another zoo as part of an ESB Breeding Programme. At that stage it will enable us to bring potentially another male and a female spotted hyena to Colchester Zoo with a view to creating a new breeding group with Mbembe our existing male spotted hyena."

In response to a question about the Amur leopards, it says:

"The Amur leopards have been mixed once now for breeding. This went well but they were both quite wary so no mating was observed this time. When Milena next comes into season they will then be introduced to each other again."

At that stage it will enable us to bring potentially another male and a female spotted hyena to Colchester Zoo with a view to creating a new breeding group with Mbembe our existing male spotted hyena."
That is good news. I thought when he died this species would become extinct in the UK, Colchester being the only current holder. A new pair means they will continue exhibiting them in the future. Good decision by Colchester.

Spent at day at Colchester this afternoon. Some things of note:
- The four new species all showed well. The saki monkeys and rufous hornbills in particular are absolutely great.
- Golden lion tamarins were not on display. Maybe they have already moved to the South American walkthrough?
- The South American walkthrough still hasn't opened yet and because the indoor areas were all being cleaned, I had next to no hope of spotting the tamandua.
- Have the black-backed jackals left the collection? Because their enclosure has been given over to the timber wolves.
- Reed frogs have moved into one of the vivariums in the Kingdom of the Wild
- Rajang's old enclosure is now being renovated as a temporary enclosure for both the sun bears and the gibbons, according to a sign on the door.

Also of interest, there were at least five people with official looking name tags, four of which I accidentally overhead in the Kingdom of the Wild. They appeared to be discussing plans for the area. I didn't catch all that much though, because I didn't really want to listen in to what might be a confidential conversation.

Am off to the zoo today!! OH no has the school holidays ended :D Can have a 'proper' visit today :p

Was hoping to see sun bears as they have their big evening event at the zoo tomorrow, hoped they would have them in time for that? (and because I am off on holiday for 2 weeks)

Should we not be starting a Autumn thread ?

Didn't make it to the zoo at the start of the week :( Going tomorrow though for the whole day AND the action for the wild event! As a teacher I'm gutted that the summer holls are over, but as a zoo enthusiast i'm over the moon; even weekends during term time seem quieter :)

Hi, does anyone know what the building work going on in the familar friends area is. (Where the old sheep enclousure was).

Visited today:

- Dende has now been moved to his new home by the looks of it. His enclosure is due to be renovated soon
- With the finishing touches done and signs put up, the new South American Walkthrough looks ready to open very soon.
- Flamingos have made a few more nests and seem to be much more active now the mirrors have gone up.
- Black-backed Jackal enclosure now given over to wolves like last year.

Any news regarding the nature area? When can we expect it to open? Also will any vistor be able to walk around or only pre-arranged visits e.g. school trips?

I don't know if this is old news, but according to the zoo's Facebook page, in a statement given by the zoo in response to a comment, the sun bears arrived possibly as long ago as last Thursday, and are currently living off-show.

Correction! Judging by a photo updated to the zoo's Facebook page, the sun bears can now be seen in the old orangutan enclosure. Must get over to Colchester soon to see them! :D

Hmph and we went to Banham today as the last part of our holiday zoo tour  (although snow leopard cubs were adorable :D )
