Colchester Zoo Colchester Zoo news 2010 #3

0.0.1 Cherry Crowned Mangabey born 11/11/2010

Can you find out the sex of this new baby? Presumably the adult breeder female is still there if there's a new baby. Do you know if something happened to the younger female (or is their ISIS listing incorrect)?

The only information I have is available on the Colchester zoos facebook page. On there none of the sex's are listed. Maybe one of the Colchester regulars can take this on?

I do not know about the younger female sorry.

We went on a very cold visit today!

Nothing to report about the 3 births because only knew about the mandrill as we were watching Olive getting very stressed with the new baby till the keepers managed to call her in!

Wondered why the cheetah was suddenly lively and darker in colour lol
Colchester Zoo News: Cheetah leaving temporarily with hope of breeding success!
Maybe the cold was affecting our zooness today

Interesting that they have now covered over one of the orangs sleeping quarters viewing for the public! Moment of panic re Rajang but they were both locked outside, with Rajang in the heated ummm cave (always popular in the wild for orangs :p )

We noticeed this on our last visit a fortnight ago. There was also a baby black and white colobus monkey there too in the "Out of Africa" area.

Had a fab visit today. Found out why the window was blocked (window has now been replaced)...Raj broke it during half term week :-D Tiga's cheek phlanges are growing nicely (I see the boys weekly)
New squirrel monkey babies are adorable, as if the capuchin baby. Chimps all on fine form. Chimp enclosure is going to be extended over to the L'Hoest money enclosure, but that's a long term plan because the sun bears is next. Sun bears both fine. Saw an aardvark outside and was very impressed! Saw the new otters for the first time and they are adorable.
Naja (lion) was over by the viewing window by the inside enslosure...a little girl was running up and down and Naja was definately stalking the kid. My friend and Bailey were nose to nose through the glass at one point too.
Didn't take any notes but did pretty much whole zoo (Usuaully I go just for chimps and orangs...and Sakis) Will be there again in the week

Not sure this really shows cheek phlanges well but I've not seen him for a while and was really surprised today how big he is and how much more mature he looks. I felt a bit sorry for Rajang getting bark in the face and wonder what will happen as Tiga gets bigger and even more full of himself, it was lovely to seem them both very active though (even though in Rajang's case it was mainly chasing Tiga when he'd had enough insults)

Otto the white rhino was out with Emily today, he was mounting her but there won't be any babies til he improves his technique. I don't know much about him (except he let me scratch him behind the ear - not today of course), has he bred before?

We managed to catch a glimpse of all the babies (I think) this weekend. The sun bears were active (everyone always says that), Srey Ya was playing with the end of the water pipe, stopping the water with her foot and we even managed to see the tamandua moving around!

Gigit, if you PM me with your e-mail address I will send you a pic of Tiga and his developing cheek phlanges as soon as my pictures are on my laptop (prob within 3 or 4 days)

Otto has improved his technique slightly OrangePerson. He mounted Emily today, the first few times he "missed" and just stood there resting on her back, but he eventually got it right!

Hope Rajy will be ok.

Another baby buffy-headed capuchin has been born to mother Barney and father Fabio. Great news for the Colchester group. :)

A female Green Anaconda also joined the resident male on 19th November, she came from Paradise wildlife park and is currently a juvenile, around 2m long.

Smooth Coated Otter Enclosure Develepmont
Work is currently underway at the site of the old Seal Pool to develop a new, purpose built, designed enclosure for our Smooth coated otters, who recently arrived in the collection in October 2010.

Development work is now in place, and whilst this enclosure is constructed the main Seal Pool and surrounding area will be closed off to allow this work to take place.
This will include the path from the Gelada bridge down to the Seal Pool, as well as the paths from the lakeside picnic area towards the Seal Pool near to the Wrap Bar also remaining closed.

By completing this development we will be able to provide a purpose built environment for our animals to suit all their physical and mental needs, and a new area that will benefit both our animals and visitors.
Regards Jordan.

I visted Colchester Zoo this morning it was quiet and it was snowing lightly for parts of the visit something I haven't exprienced before. Although I have been when it's settled.:)

The sun bears Jo-Jo and the female who I've forgotton the name of:o were both interacting well. With one coming inside and then coming back out again. they were climbing up the logs and playfighting and one of them looked through the visitors at eveeyone briefly (remind you of someone?;)).

The boarded up bit of the orang den has gone Rajang was in that den underneath the sack but moved slowly up towards us when we came.:) Tiga was in the main indoor area with the sack under him but peering at all the visitors.

I got good views of the smooth-coated-otters. I saw the baby cherry-crowned mangaby and black and white colobus monkeys.

The lions were outside at one point they were sat very comfortably on the lawn would have made a brilliant but I didn't take a camera. They then came inside with male sitting inside and the females pacing round the indoor area. One of them put their paws at the windows.

The seal pool has been mainly demolished. But the black spider monkey enclosure is still up even though I'm sure I saw them demolishing the indoor area???

No they were never demolishing it, just giving the indoor areas a refurbishment.

I too visited today, from about 2.30-4 :D. Some things I noticed:

-Blue poison dart frogs are now on show in the discovery centre and have replaced the Hissing Cockroaches.
-The Sun Bears again were extremely active and were getting about the enclosure very quickly, with one of them falling from quite a height but coming out unscathed.
-They have boarded up the window of the indoor viewing area of the Cattle Egrets/ Scarlet Ibis, and the birds were inside.
-There is a golden lion tamarin in the end enclosure of the original south american enclosure, with crowned pigeons and Montseratt Oriole's in the middle section.
-The wilds of asia development is progressing nicely, 3 enclosures can clearly be seen, with the climbing poles for the Red Panda enclosure constructed. There are two other enclosures with metal poles to support a meshed roof for Rhinoceros hornbill and Pileated Gibbons, one of these has an indoor area (of which I will post a picture), roughly on the site of the old dik dik indoor area.
-Work has continued on the development of accomodation for the Wild about animals theatre.
-There is a new wooden statue of a Komodo Dragon which has been placed in the hunting dog viewing area (opposite Dragons of Komodo for non regulars).

I think thats it, any questions I will try to answer :)

According to the Facebook page, not long ago Colchester recieved some red-eyed tree frogs that will be off-show until early next year when they will be included in Worlds Apart.

Sad news - Koife the giraffe has died

On a visit to Cotswold Wildlife Park today, I found out the sad news that Koife the giraffe died last week of sudden death syndrome. I thought regular Colchester Zoo visitors should also know the news, which is why I have posted it here as well as in the Cotswold Wildlife Park forum.

I had forgot about their latest monstrosity WHY do they do it to us regulars!
Hangs head in shame.... see attached
