Colchester Zoo Colchester Zoo news 2011

I went to Colchester Zoo for the first time in a few months this morning it was nice and quiet.

The orangutans Rajang and Tiga were both in the main indoor area interacting well it seembed at the end window. Then Rajang moved over to the other end of the room and climbed up a few feet on the mesh with his fur leaning on one of the poles.

The new "Wilds of Asia" devolpment has very enclosures for each of the animals there. Both gibbons were active and they were both grooming each other. There enclosure had a langeroover still in it as well as some plants and ample climbing opportunities.

Also the new nature centure is now open and has some lots of nice signs and plants in it includeing some very tall cowsilp which was taller than me!!

Other things of note:
There's been a new baby squriel monkey
A new litter of smooth coated otters
the gelada baboon enclosure is a bit better now with the added poles
the red ruffed lemur enclosure is now gone with them now in the black and white ruffed lemur enclosure.

Have the new male Geladas been introduced to the main group?
How many Smooth Coated Otter pups are there?has the older sibling returned to RSCC?

I don't know about the geladas. I know there were a few baby smooth coated otters but I couldn't see them they were inside.

Sorry, but what is a 'langeroover'?

maybe its how one pronounces range rover in an Essex accent :D

(for what its worth Googling it produces a website with langeroover as the domain name. Go figure :D)

I meant langeroover as in the jeep. I don't know what you think about that?

Right. So a Land Rover/Range Rover then? :D

I think its rather bizarre now that I've seen the photo (http://www.zoochat.com/57/wilds-asia-development-201910/), as I can't see the point of it. It would have been cool if it was built into the wall, so you could sit inside and watch the gibbons, especially if there was a heater in the bonnet for the colder months maybe?

Nice cabbage tree in that picture btw, are they quite common in British zoos?

A langeroover is a hybrid between a Land Rover and a Range Rover. This particular vehicle came from a Cotswold country estate where a male Land Rover had been kept with a Herd of female Range Rovers. Studbook keepers had warned against this practice but their protests went unheard. Now, after much pressure from 4x4 enthusiasts who are keen to preserve pure blood lines, the vehicle in question has been sent to live out its days in the relative luxury that Colchester can provide.

Has he any siblings?;)

well lets just hope the estate doesn't want the rover's return....boom boom!
