Colchester Zoo Colchester Zoo news 2013

Another thought that struck me was why they would want to escape? I think that maybe they spotted something outside the zoo fence, Fox, Badger or dear and decided to give chase, i can understand them getting out of the enclosure but then to escape the zoo boundary at roughly the same time, something must have stirred them on. All very sad as I keep saying. The only other explanation is some one didn't close the gate correctly and it swung open? then they panicked realizing they weren't in their own space.

Yes I agree, and ideally the zoos perimeter fencing should be good enough to contain them or anything really. Although I have not been to Colchester for some time, I remember that the entrance area seemed fairly vulnerable in terms of a lack of animal- security (fencing) and I wonder if that was a possible "weak- spot" ?

The entrance now is through automatic doors and turnstiles then more automatic doors to the zoo it's self. Coming out is automatic doors straight into a hall are then more doors into the gift shop, then automatic doors out again.

A week spot for me has always been the main work gates from the road leading to the familiar friends Elephant areas, then the rest of the zoo. They are just big swing gates, that are -or were- proud of the floor. I don't know the area the wolves exited the main perimeter fence was, but i assume close to the wolf exhibit, as the rest of the zoo stayed open all day.

Fair enough, it has been along time since I visited last!
Yes you are probably right, I don`t see how the zoo could have continued to function with the public around, had they known about the wolf escape in a more dramatic and obvious way?

i visited today and i noticed..........

- that the ant colony are gone to the death of the queen ant.

-there is a baboon in the patas monkey house temporarily until a new home is found.

-the viewing area at the bottom of the new bear enclosure has a upstairs viewing lodge.

-new species in the discovery center.

and that the male leopard sayan is apparently being replaced if he does not breed in 2014.

This move doesn't surprise me - Sayan, Dortmund's male and Edinburgh's male have had enough time maybe a swap around with them.

That was pretty much bob on :p - great to hear about the Duiker arrival too :p

Very good that Duiker are returning, but bad news that the zoo is losing YET ANOTHER cat species!
I too went for a while today & saw a keeper feeding the baby saki, glad it is still around.

If only! I also had a once in a lifetime experience of seeing 2 aardvarks outside at once today, and all 4 were in fact awake at the same time.
Jordan's right about the duikers; it will be great to see them return.
I've always liked the Geoffroy's cat, and putting them next to the sea lions gave them al lot more exposure than they used to, and it's a shame that they won't stay there.
Also, Capuchins will be staying in the old orang house permanently although it will probably get some redevelopment, eventually.

Only time i've ever seen the aardvarks outside was at the xmas late opening 2 years ago. I did get to see a Fennec Fox awake for the first time in a while .
I would like to think the old bear enclosures may be used for more small cats, but i wont hold my breath!

I also visits today for a work placement interview - in the volunteer section there was a sheet detailing 'collection changes'. It was 2 months old, so if any of this is already common knowledge then I apologise. Otherwise, I found out the following:

If you were attending an interview for a work placement, do you really think you should be releasing off-record information about moves yet to take place?

For your sake, and the sake of the forum, I think it is prudent to delete this information for now - especially as I can see one piece of information which is incorrect.

I believe those are to become off show enclosures, unfortunately.

TLD, you're right and I apologise, but as I said this was 2 months old and in full view of anyone who should happen to go in. I talked about a lot more In the interview that I won't post on here for the same reason. I've only posted what I thought was relatively common knowledge anyway or things very soon to happen (for the most part at least).

Once again, I apologise if I haven't showed a correct amount of discretion in this instance.

No problem :) just thought it wise to err on the side of caution.
