Colchester Zoo Colchester Zoo news 2014

Pertinax I have not seen any for ages!! .... When we were at London Zoo in the summer in the Clore one of the volunteers pointed out a rat that was as big as a small dog! whilst commenting on them having all of London wildlife in the zoo but had not seen one that big before!

I was close to pronouncing Colchester a rat-free zone.;) Maybe they've had a more effective blitz on them recently.

I don't remember seeing any at ZSL but have watched them by the bridge over the waterfowl enclosure adjoining the Lake in the Park. Here they feed on the bread leftovers thrown to the birds. I guess the Regents Park Canal is prime habitat also.

i think that when tiga arrived no one knew that rajang would live this old so know he has its been a bit of a shock. When the old man comes to the end of his life a group of females will arrive so the zoo can start to breed.

Provided that the studbook keeper approves.

They have but only when they don't have a hybrid Orang in the same enclosure!!!!!!

I seem to remember grille partitions in the indoor area, through which matings could probably be accomplished too(as per Twycross in the old days).

'Rajang' is 'only' 48. Depending on his general health he could go on for some years yet so they may be stuck with this situation for sometime to come.

Do they have any space to house a female with them at all?
(I wonder ..)

There are three(or is it two) small inside connected on-show dens and one larger indoor exhibition area. Plus the single large outdoor area.( I don't think there is any offshow area) Currently, if split as they are now, one male occupies the large indoor area, and the other the smaller den area and the outdoors, I presume they are rotated sometimes. A female could be added as the large indoor area is plenty big enough for more than one animal (more like 3), but it would be a difficult combination to manage, especially if all three animals needed to be seperate e.g. if the female had a small baby.

I doubt they will add any females until rajang has passed.

I think it would be better if they didn't. Male Orangutans don't need company in the same way as e.g. Chimps or Gorillas. In the wild 'Tiga' would no doubt already be living a pretty solitary life by now.

when i last spoke to a keeper at the zoo they were trying to swap the male giraffe due to fact hes a pain in the neck not getting on with any other animal in the paddock.

Otto will soon be mixed with baby
