Colchester Zoo Colchester Zoo news 2015

The Colchester zoo documentary

Just incase you haven't seen this there is a 52 minute documentary on colchester zoo available to watch on youtube (search 'The Colchester zoo documentary').

It gives a brief description on the history of Colchester zoo but seems to focus more on the day to day running of the establishment, personally I feel a greater focus on the life of the animals (feeding, training etc...) would have made this documentary a lot more interesting to watch.

Snippets of news from official website/facebook/visits;

-Blue crane pair, Cecil and Sapphire have successfully laid an egg which on the 24th June hatched.
-On the 7th of July, exactly a year and a day after welcoming their last chick, the Victoria crowned pigeon pair successfully hatched another! The new arrival joins mum, Violet and dad, Ozzy in the aviary at Penguin Shores!
-On 28th March a Smooth Coated Otter cub was born this has now been confirmed as a girl and has been given the name "Touch" which means small in Cambodian by keepers.
-White rhino calf Mabaso, turned 1 on July 11th.
-The Chimp world redevelopment has really taken a hold with much of the old outdoor part of the exhibit now completely destroyed.

Also does anyone happen to know if there are any plans to attempt to breed the sun bears now they appear to be settled in their new home??

Yes there are plans to breed the bears!

In their temporary enclosure srey ya was kept on the pill however as soon as she moved to the new enclosure she was come of it so hopefully it will not be too soon until we have some tiny bear cubs running around at colchester!:D

Colchester will soon a receive a 2 year old female cheetah from Burgers Zoo.

I have often wondered how this exchange works, presumably it is all part of the EEP scheme, but who shoulders the cost of transport etc? the sending zoo or the receiving zoo? or is it split between the two?

From a visit on 26/07/2015:

-A Gelada Baboon has been born on the 21st July
-The Chimp world development is coming along nicely with most of the area now cleared.

Also In a Hyena Keeper talk; the zookeeper only mention the male and two offspring...does anyone know if the female is still at the zoo??

Is there any indication as to when the off-exhibit blue duikers are likely to be put on display?

I would be very interested, please, if one of the regular Colchester Zoo visitors informs us when they go on show.

Went on a visit yesterday (30/7/2015); these are the things I noted:

- As mentioned above, only three spotted hyaenas are visible; as I was only there in the morning and so missed the afternoon talk I am unsure what has happened to the female
- Four new Saharan spiny-tailed lizards have arrived in the Kingdom of the Wild lizard enclosure (named Blue, Echo, Delta and Charlie, after the Jurassic World Velociraptors); I only saw two plus the older male Spike
- There has been a stationary jeep that visitors can climb into and a large tent that is linked to the work on the zoo's Umphafa Reserve both added by the elephant enclosure
- The end viewing area for the Dragons of Komodo has been updated, with all the transport boxes of stuffed animals replaced with updated signage about all the zoo's conservation work
- Cannot remember the date it was born on, but there is a new baby gelada - if I recall correctly this brings the troop up to twelve in number
- The snowflake moray eel was visible in the Kingdom of the Wild marine aquarium
- The Chimp World redevelopment is continuing - there are now a series of very tall metal poles that I imagine may be supporting a much taller roof
- Finally, I managed to see one of the aardvarks awake and outside in broad daylight - I think it might be the most recent youngster, a male called AJ (Adela Junior)

Had a good visit yesterday and noticed...

- work on the chimp enclosure is progressing very slowly with hardly any progress from my last visit before the holidays.

- there are now rats on show in the familiar friends.

- the leopards seemed to be shut in all day with neither of them having access outside.

- the old elephant statues have now gone and been replaced with a catering outlet.

- there are now only two green anacondas instead of three.

- i only saw two hyenas.

also does anyone know when the new female cheetah is supposed to arrive and where she is coming from?

will add photos asap.

On a visit today;

-There have been Lorikeet Chicks hatched throughout August
-Baby meerkats have been born

I have often wondered how this exchange works, presumably it is all part of the EEP scheme, but who shoulders the cost of transport etc? the sending zoo or the receiving zoo? or is it split between the two?

usually the receiving zoo

Another recent new arrival - a female Linne's two-toed sloth from Chemnitz has moved into the Rainforest Walkthrough. This brings the total number of sloths at Colchester up to four individuals (two males and two females).

They have also recently bred the Tanzanian tailless whip-scorpion. Although the young are off-show the adults are supposedly visible in the Discovery Centre (they have been signed there for well over a year, but were either not there or brilliant at hiding).

Went for a visit this morning - these are the things I noticed:

- The two new female giraffes have already been mixed in with the existing pair.
- There is some work going on in Kingdom of the Wild; the right-hand Nile monitor enclosure has had its wall knocked through into the area housing the aquarium pumps and the African marine aquarium has also been drained and cordoned off.
- Some animals have had their numbers boosted - there seemed to be a lot more green-and-black and yellow-banded poison-dart frogs than previously, along with new clown and spanner barbs and blue-green chromis in Orangutan Forest.
- Malaysian trumpet snails have been added to one of the aquariums in Penguin Shores.

From the website yesterday;

-On the 5th August Colchester Zoo welcomed a female cheetah name Sia from Burgers Zoo in the Netherlands!

Also from their facebook page;

-Happy Birthday to two of our spotted hyena, Abu who turns 10 years old today and his son Jasiri who is now 2 years old!

(Does anyone know how many hyena they hold now? As I haven't heard the female being mentioned at any of the keeper talks in my past few visits to the zoo!)

Visited yesterday for first time this year, few observations:

No ants still in kingdom of wild enclosure

New sensation station in familiar friends

Saw the new two giraffes

Hunting dogs now a lot bigger pack as mentioned earlier

Quite a few new displays/talks

Squirell monkey enclosure has had some of the glass panels boared up: annoying

Butterfly house looked like it just had the one species in there

I Would love to see the zoo create a decent hippo enclosure, there one seems so small and dark.

Visited yesterday (late night opening) , just a few things I noticed that I haven't seen mentioned:

A second Gelada was born in August

A baby L'hoests monkey was born in early September.

Hyena count - 3 for me too

Only saw 2 wolves, have they lost another one?
