Colchester Zoo Colchester Zoo News 2019

I went for a very brief visit to Colchester Zoo this morning (was there for less than two hours). The main news of note is:

- Barbary macaques have now arrived - I saw at least three, but they are currently confined to the house and the access tunnel.
- There are just two patas monkeys left again; from the size of the two animals they are the newly-arrived females.

Have the colobus monkeys left the collection? As they were moved to the new enclosure with the Patas but since they were moved I haven’t seen them anywhere?

Is anyone else here from Colchester? If so can you ever hear bailey calling during the evenings? I can hear him from my house and it’s amazing how far the call can carry

Might help if you let people know who/what you are talking about :p

Lion roar can carry for seven miles apparently. How far away from the zoo are you?

Also spoke to a keeper on my previous visit who said that two new female orangutans were going to arrive at the end of the year.

Is there any evidence of alterations being made to the orang exhibit to make it suitable for orangs who might be more energetic than Rajang and Tiga? For example, more climbing opportunities in the 'pit with a climbing frame', high platforms indoors (I can't remember seeing any but may be wrong)?

The zoo has released news about the arrival of two male Barbary macaques named Saghro and Yagour, both two-year-olds from Apenheul. The three females (called Sutra, M'Punky and Ouria) will be coming from Sigean, France.

A bit odd, considering that I definitely saw three macaques on my most recent visit.

The information about the macaques is from the link below:

Visited today:-

Both leopard cubs are becoming more active but are mostly spending time in the far corner of the enclosure, one was even climbed up the tree in the far right hand corner but viewing is very hard due to the way the viewing is in there

The zebra where confined to the hard stand today which is unusual its normal just the giraffe kept in when the ground is muddy.

counted 4 macaques sitting in the tunnel today. The 5th may have been inside as the two pata monkeys where out in the enclosure today.

Tigers cubs were being feed on their own today while mum was shut in feeding on a chicken the cubs appear to have leg of horse or cow hung over the pond.

No sign of the mud turtles in the out of africa house today and still no sign of the Madagascar swift either

I went on a visit myself today; this is what I noted:

Species Arrivals, Departures and Movements
- The rosy bitterling (Rhodeus ocellatus) in Koi Niwa have been reidentified as Taiwan bitterling (Tanakia himantegus)
- There is a new, rather small West African lungfish on display in the Lake Victoria aquarium in Kingdom of the Wild
- A female Fiji banded iguana has arrived in Worlds Apart and a female Gariau forest dragon has arrived in the small reptile house by the chimpanzees
- The Sensation Station has updated its signage for the species that come out for encounters; as well as the spur-thighed tortoise, domestic rat, domestic rabbit and guinea pig that have always been signed here, the barn owl, brown-nosed coati, striped skunk, giant spiny stick insect, West African land snail (Archachatina marginata) and Ghana speckled-leg millipede (Telodeinopus aoutii) are all signed as well.

Births
- Saw a number of the current crop of youngsters today - the tiger cubs, red panda cubs, young bearded saki monkey and rock hyraxes
- The only baby I saw that hasn't been mentioned here is a new baby squirrel monkey in Heart of the Amazon

General Observations
- Today both the West African mud turtles were on display in their enclosure in Edge of Africa; still no sign of the new Cuvier's Madagascar swift
- The maneless zebra were still confined to the hardstanding area
- Had my first ever sighting of a crowned lemur in the walkthrough today, over a year after they arrived

From the zoos Facebook Page;

Following the arrival of two male Barbary macaques from the Netherlands in early October we have now welcomed three females to join them from France named Sutra, M’Punky and Ouria!

The three ladies are gradually being introduced to the males and so far the group seem to be mixing well and settling in to their new home!
