Has anything been heard of the potential plans to obtain Okapi and European Mammals in the coming years?
They didnt get planning permission to do so. The zoo has a lease on more land however I think in about 6-7 years they will have permission to build on it.
On 29th April a single Solomon Island skink was born at Colchester Zoo; to the best of my knowledge this is the first time the species has been born here.
The skink group at Colchester now consists of a single adult male, two adult females and the new, currently unsexed offspring (on all my previous visits, I had thought there were only two adults).

More births as the Bush dogs welcome their 4th litter

The four cheetah cubs have now been named.
The three females have been named Nova, Hope and Star, chosen by the keepers from public suggestions for names starting with N, H and S. The male cub has been named Tom, after Colonel Tom Moore.
The public name suggestions required a donation - as a result of this, £3,500 was raised which has gone on to care for the animals.

Was lucky to go to the a private opening today before they open to the public and it was great
The new one way route round zoo is easy to follow but a very long way to go from one end to other so make sure you don't miss an animal as you have to do the whole zoo again.
New entrance for booking tickets is almost finished but is now not needed as people have to prebook at home so are using gold card holders entrance . But they have moved some offices in there now such as guest services and experience check in.
many indoor areas are off show but it is changing daily as i found found sealion tunnel was allowed to open in afternoon (not planned as had be told the night before they was to keep it closed so had been blocked off, tunnel was green with algae)
Off show at the moment Rajang's Forest, Worlds Apart, Penguin Shores, Worlds Apart Walkthrough, Chimpanzee Lookout (Indoors), Iguana Forest and South American Walkthrough, Elephant House, Kingdom of the wild indoors, Pygmy Hippo Cove, Butterfly Glade, Lost Madagascar, Wallaby Walkabout All play grounds are shut as well as the main
Tiger cubs are all grown up and are nearly as big as mum Taiga
Lottie has grown a lot and is silly as playful as ever
Leopards cubs spent most of the day asleep
Squirrel Monkeys now have both sides of Heart of the Amazon and the Bearded saki have moved to the Inca Trail
Rhinoceros Hornbill have left the zoo signs have been removed from enclosure and nest box is no longer outside.
Gibbons where very vocal today could be heard from difference parts of zoo.
Cheetah cubs won't be on show for few more weeks
All three Baby Bush dogs came out of their den to play with adults till mum carried them away
baby ring tailed lemurs are growing well
New path has opened up down side of Red river hogs towards vultures given chance to see from different angle
saw vultures mating today as well which was a first
the zoo seem to be down to 1.1 ostriches all tho the remaining female seems to of had a accident and is limping a lot she is being kept on hard stand a long side Otto
zoo is now using the old exit to save people from queuing into the shop to get out .

I have never seen them outside in around 20 visits, a large exhibit that could do with something visible, how about fishing cats being brought back?
Visit today and surprised to see Tanya and Opal are now in with Tembo. Tanya bossing Tembo about. Zola is now on her own in the main paddock. Seen photos of Tembo mating with Zola over weekend. Tanya and Opal was swapped back when Tembo was put back in for the night.
That’s surprising but pleasing to hear especially with all the rumours last year that the zoo could be moving Tembo to another collection due to the age of the cows and the length of time between the last successful pregnancy- perhaps the zoo saw the lockdown and closure as the perfect time to attempt to breed the elephants without the public being present, especially with how Tembo isn’t always overly friendly towards to public!
I’m assuming there isn’t much (if any) chance to speak to the keepers currently to ask?

But Tanya can no longer get pregnant. It has been 19 years since the birth of her only calf. And that's too much. I think Zola is also useless to reproduce. She probably has some birth problems, none of her four calves were born alive. Maybe there is a chance at Opal, but I don't really believe it either. Anyway, I keep my fingers crossed, Opal or Zola may surprise us by giving birth to a healthy calf.
keeper said they are planning to breed from all three but will be long time till they know if successful. They said since Tembo had his dental work last year hes back up to full health and is showing a lot more interest in the girls.
Please can we remember to include which species we are taking about. Not everyone is a regular who will know the individual animal's names.
