Colchester Zoo Colchester Zoo news 2022

Maybe they’ve had multiple binturongs leave the collection?

Does anyone know where Orson the Binturong went from Colchester? I don’t remember them saying what happened to him.

He went to Shaldon.

The Binturong that came to Colchester from Dudley was originally sexed as a female at the collection that bred her. So Dudley called her Ellie

Later on (at Dudley) further checks revealed "Ellie" to be a male. Hence why he was relocated to Colchester and re-named

Went for a visit to Colchester Zoo this morning - it was very cold, so a lot of the animals were indoors, but these are things that I noticed:

- Regarding Worlds Apart, the glass bridge was covered with condensation underneath, so views were not great, but I did see the black pacu and ripsaw catfish.

- The lights in the Caribbean reef tank are now off, with signs saying the space is going to be redeveloped. I also couldn't see any poison-dart frogs in the neighbouring enclosure.

- The old gold panning area, between the Koi Niwa building and the elephant house, seems to have been demolished. It previously had a seasonal display without any animals - hopefully something more interesting will take its place.

- Managed to see the baby coppery titi monkey in the South American walkthrough area.

I visited today also and the enclosure I was on about that is now marked for fish is the old Pied Tamarin enclosure.

Tembo was outside alone today. Don’t know if anyone noticed if the three girls were together today or not?

Some notes from my visit yesterday (22/12/22)
  • I saw 3 Lion tailed Macaques, with probably the bets view I have got of them, 1 was separated from the other 2 and one of the 2 (looked like a male) seemed to definitely be showing his age.
  • World Apart seems to be undergoing a lot of changes at the moment, though most of them I believe have been mentioned here.
  • A few similar changes but on a much smaller scale have been going on in Heart of The Amazon since my last visit, with the two fish tanks and the indoor Squirrel Monkey enclosure (I was also lucky enough to spot some Squirrel Monkey youngsters).
  • There were some flooding/leaking issues at Playa Patagonia, the sealion tunnel was filled with puddles and the exit path with the normal viewing windows was blocked off.
  • Some Capuchins were present in one of the old bear enclosures, I believe there are still some individuals present in their normal enclosure though.
  • There were fogged up windows throughout the zoo but many active animals still.
  • The Kingdom of The Wild and Elephant Kingdom animals were unsurprisingly in early, with the giraffe, Astrid (I think it was her as she is heavily pregnant now and due in the next few week), and Tembo and Zola.
  • Construction/destruction is continuing on the old Wild Displays animal housing and now the area opposite, used for themed visitor activities in recent years.
  • The seating area of the Waterhole cafe (between Elephant Kingdom and Kingdom of The Wild) was undergoing significant construction/renovation.
  • Blue Duiker were signed in the Anteater enclosure, I believe 2 are temporarily being held here.
  • Because of bird flu:
  • Australian Rainbows are closed
  • Crowned cranes are off show
  • Flamingos are off show (in their house)
  • Ostriches are partly off show- I think they are not allowed in the main Kingdom of The Wild paddock.

Would any of the people next visiting Colchester kindly look at the orangutans for me? I'm not expecting any developments, I'd just like to know how Mali and Tatty especially are doing.

I was thinking of mentioning it in my post above, guess I just forgot as I hadn't noted it down on my visit. All 3 Orangutans were in the main indoor area when I was at Rajang's Forest at around 14:15, they were all quite active walking around (I think picking up food off the floor that had presumably been scattered) and one of the 3 occasionally sat down every once in a while. After this stopped, they went over to the smaller rest areas and when I came back in from outside I couldn't see them, so I assume they were still there in those indoor areas somewhere, I doubt they went outside.

Thankyou, Rajang-GOAT.

I saw all 3 outside earlier in the week,, late morning. The male and older female were under blankets next to each other on one platform. The younger one climbed around for a while before burying herself under a blanket on the next platform.

Thankyou, pipaluk. Looks like a continuation of the situation I saw earlier this year where Tatty is being forced into separation from her mother. I'm rather hoping there are plans for her to move on to a breeding situation at some point.

For quite a patch of time the Cappuchins lived in the right of the 2 old bear enclosures. It was after Bears of the Rising Sun was completed that they moved into their current enclusure which funnily enough had housed the sun bears. Do you know of any plans they've got for those 2 old enclsures which had been borded up.

Exciteing news regarding baby Giraffe.:)

Welcome back, I have read about the Capuchins previously being housed in that area, but I meant the Giraffes, as well as pregnant Astrid (Southern White Rhino, mother to Tayo who was born in October 2020, this will be her second calf) in earlier that the rest of the Kingdom of The Wild paddock animals, sorry. There is no male Giraffe as of yet, but Astrid is due quite soon, and Emily (older Southern White Rhino) could become pregnant as well, all great arrivals for Colchester Zoo's 60th anniversary.

Colchester Zoo have released a summary of new arrivals born at the zoo in 2022.
