Colchester Zoo Colchester Zoo News 2023

Colchester are making an "exciting announcement" later today for anyone on social media. Presume going off the picture Otto has been busy again ;)

Quite amazing really. All the time Otto was at Woburn, he didn't manage to get a single one of their Rhino's pregnant, yet he churns them out big time at Colchester!

Went for a morning visit to Colchester Zoo this morning - there was nothing new in the animal collection that I could determine, but some more building work has continued:

- The old falconry arena has now been dug up, with several diggers now on the land.

- The old wild dog enclosure has had a series of short metal posts and very tall white metal poles installed near the viewing windows opposite the Komodo dragons - it looks as if the viewing area is being extended out over the enclosure.

Does anyone know how many cherry crowned mangabey there are? And follow up question how many male female and juvenile ones there are

Back in about winter 2018 there was a male and female, and they produced a male offspring close to Christmas, and it has just been that trio until fairly recently (early this year or sometime in 2022), when I noticed there was (I think) a second female that had appeared. So I'm pretty sure it is currently 2:2- 1 adult male, his son, the female that gave birth to the younger male, and the newer female. I think I expressed my confusion about the situation here when I noticed the second female, so there should be some info about it in this year's or last year's Colchester thread.

Ah ok thank you for the information

Had a great day out at Colchester today. It was really busy but once people were in they spread out pretty well. Weather was ideal, sunny but not too hot.

The young dik dik was out and about which was nice to see. There were also some new looking warthog piglets which I enjoyed a lot.

Most of the animals were out and so got some good pics - the small primate walkthroughs as usual were a real highlight for me. Far too long spent in both. Enjoyed some active sun bears. I didn’t see the lion as the inside area was rammed with people (the only area that was a real choke point, the sea lion talk was also a bit crowded so went to find other things while that was on).

I hadn’t seen the lion tailed macaques on previous visits so enjoyed the first view of them so much.

Chimps were not out but saw them indoors. The Orangs were out briefly. Got great views of the elephants and rhinos.

The blue duikers were chasing about - assume it’s a male and female? Looked like a hot pursuit.

The capuchin indoor viewing area was closed.

I do wish the bush dogs were easier to access than pushing alongside the busy train queue - there’s a bit of a tut fest to get past even if you explain you’re just going to see the animals. They weren’t out so sorry to the double buggy pushers I went past twice!

All in all a really good visit. Went round about 4 times as remembered the things I hadn’t seen and turnings I hadn’t taken yet too late! Good exercise though.

Colchester Zoo have announced that in 2025, they will be becoming a charitable trust known as Colchester Zoological Society.

Even more excitingly, a new masterplan has been announced. The extension seems to be going out into the fields to the right of the zoo - among the new animals mentioned, either on the new map or in the article itself, are gorillas, bonobos, okapi and hippos.

The updated map can be seen here:

Another holder of okapis and bonobos? Certainly very exciting! This is big news for the UK zoo community. When they show a new hippo exhibit on the map do we know if this is just a new exhibit for their pygmy hippos or if Colchester are planning to get common hippos? Considering the other species mentioned seem to be African rainforest species I would lean towards the former.

Another holder of okapis and bonobos? .

Twycross might not like the latter.. by accident or design they've managed to retain a monopoly on Bonobo in the UK for all the time they have kept them, but I don't think there is anything to stop another zoo keeping them too- perhaps not with stock from Twycross though.;)

If it said just "HIPPO EXHIBIT", they would almost certainly mean Nile/River/Common Hippo, because "Hippopotamus" alone is the name for that species in general. Since the zoo already has Pygmy Hippos, I think that might mean both of them!

That is quite the logical leap.

Plus with Gorillas and Bonobos Colchester would become a second holder of all four Great Apes in the UK.
