Colchester Zoo Colchester- Zoo with a difference.

But as I said before, life would be boring if we didn't have things like wobbly bridges and steep paths, and anything else that isn't 'safe'. :)

I don't like the fact the lemurs are below the bridge and you can never really see them properly unless you go on the train and then its only brief (and my fella reckons it full of kids and we have only been allowed to go on the train once lol)

The stink of fat wafting from the 'Chip and Dip' next to the Amur Tigers is quite nauseating, as is the smell from the Chicken fast food place near the entrance to chimp world.

Also, while on the subject of smells, the otherwise state of the art loos in Orangutan Forest often stink of stale wee - :eek: - far more so than any of the other toilets and you can quite often smell it outside (yuk). Many of the other toilets have tiny cubicles ..... to actually get in there and shut the door you have to edge down the side of the loo (any other regular Colchester female visitors will probably know what I mean, and I'm not fat !).

I don't understand why they don't sell any chocolate in any of the food stalls ...... yet sell lurid bags of cheap looking candy so it's not an enforced health thing.

Back to animals ...... yes, it's a real shame you can't get close to the lemurs, and that the jackals are only visible from the train ..... all very well if you go off peak but I've queued 30 mins for it before (never again).
 
Don't take it to heart! Always remember that none of us is personally responsible for what just happens to be our local zoo ;)
 
Well I know how to spot a zoochatter at Colchester now!!

They stick to the easy routes! and hang on to any handrails!
They hold up the traffic at the bridge while trying to spot a lemur!
They wear earplugs!
They are never seen with a lovely wooden boat of chip n dip!
They are not seen admiring the fake rock and wondering if it will look good on the rockery!
They are seen shaking their heads and crying 'why' at the Geladas!
And they know what a forest looks like.... :D

Please feel free to add (or at least till we guilt Pertinax in to visiting a bit more often than 7 yearly :p )

I used to visit more frequently at one time when I only lived an hour away in East Anglia... in those days there was only one 'forest':):rolleyes:- the Mandrill one- which initially was a woodchip floor and some funny boxlike structures- it is so much better now:) I can remember too when the Mandrills were in a rocky 'cage' opposite the Lions- they had to move them due to the success rate of the group- now one of the biggest in Europe.
 
There are lots of special Colchester guessing games for people who visit occasionally. Some of my favourites are:-
  • which of these paths is a dead end?
  • where have they put the hutias this time?
  • why did they build the Komodo dragon's house so tall? Did someone have a joke by telling the architect that they could fly?
  • and the old favourite, what colour will the 'rock' be in the newest enclosure?

Thats sooo funny gentle lemur had me in stitches :D

Never thought about the Komodo exhibit before you mentioned it :eek: maybe its so the waterfall from the sky looks prettier? Don't all dragons fly then :p

Yes, I noticed it was a veritable 'Palace of the Dragons' with vast ceiling height- very strange.

Rockwork- pink, brown, cream, candy colour- you name it, its there somewhere, except ironically in the one enclosure- the Gelada baboons- that would actually benefit from some.:rolleyes:

Just read the info in the link. It mentions a "new species of crocodile". Was this written before the arrival of the pair of Cuban Crocs, or will the new species be in addition to their Cubans and Slender-snouted pair ?
It sounds pretty good, if it goes ahead.

I'm probably zoo chat's noseyest member but that really got me intrigued. Please don't say more than you'd like but I've always been intrigued by where you live so where abouts are you in Britain?

I think thats just it the two Cubans and two Slender-snouted. Although I suppose the zoo could bring in Caimans?
 
Coming back back to music and soundeffects does anyone remember the annoying "quiz show" like noises you could press where the babirus's were? That was indeed noisy and I often wondered (and still do) as to wether the Babirus's really liked them.

I would like to think it was especially written :) as we are unique but its probably ex-lift music lol
