Colchester Zoo Colchester zoo

I saw the Michaela Strachan programme (or a part of it) on channel 5 tonight, and in the part i saw they were going to ultrascan a female pygmy hippo.
The programme showed the female in an indoor area, with a small indoor area with pool and waterfall, with a deep natural substrate on the floor.
The male and female were also shown meeting nose to nose in a mesh lined tunnel.
Is there more to the hippos home at the zoo?
Is there an outdoor area?
A separate area for the male, or is the indoor area used in rotation?
And finally, is the female pregnant?

I couldn't find any pics in the gallery.

Yes, the female hippo was pregnant. It showed on the ultrasound (which was taken in June) that the foetus was 3 inches long, and developing well.

Right, aside from the area you described, there is a longer but narrower indoor area which is connected to the other indoor part by a tunnel (which you also said about) which the public walk over the top of to look at the aqaurium and view the patas monkeys outside. The longer indoor area then has access to an outdoor area with a pool and a few trees, this area is slightly larger than the indoor area with the waterfall. Great news about the pregnancy!

PS when I went yesterday the male and female were together
