collection plan for new zoo

I am asking here for some help on developing a collection plan for a currently small zoo in Ireland that is awaiting its BIAZA membership. We are currently looking for the following animals and any recommendations or offers would also be appreciated
Agoutis any species but several pairs are wanted
Maras
Wolves any species
small felines
Great grey owls

We cant get them from other zoos yet untill the BIAZA membership comes through but want to get new species for next season

You can always try and contact exotic animal rescue centers, many of them have animals like skunks, squirrels, raccoons, prairiedogs and even small primates and lemurs that need a good home.

AAP in the Netherlands is one, decent and sadly a well needed organisation. But there's bound to be more around...

Hi Krusty,

Before I put in any suggestions, I would appreciate if you could tell us what lines your management is thinking of. What about storyline and educational set up and direction? Do you have a business plan, collection plan brief and masterplanning development for the next 5-10 years?

First: since it is not yet under the BIAZA or EAZA umbrella I cannot see this facility acquiring anything unusual or extra-ordinary. Unless ofcourse management is seriously looking at making contacts with rescue centers in situ and fostering cross-border support lines (see Linton and the Endangered Species Center). In situ conservation

For: any mammalian species is just way too broad spectrum ..... Are we talking just small mammals like lemurs, marsupials or also small felids and some unusual hoofstock?

Looking at acquiring parrots, birds of prey and gamebirds and improve the bird section is more directional. There are sufficient sites - even on the internet - to make that one work out. How are management then trying to make inroads into the BIAZA/EAZA bird plans for starters (which can be sourced from the TAGs' and sundry)?
 
There is a large section of birds of preys and there have been offers of several species of eagle from some private breeders and there are some trained birds of prey present so a falconry display is possible. The Final BIAZA inspection is in November so work is currently being done to ensure that everything is passed with flying colours. The only species that are currently excluded for collection are big cats and bears at the moments. There is about 30acres to be developed in the future and 10 that are being developed at the moment. I dont know much about the eduacational plans at the moment and for infrastrucure a water wheel has been established which is connected to a river to generate sustainable power and wind catchers are being investigated. As for large mammals there is the potential and willingness to set up bachelor groups of species such as zebra etc. All small carnivores and primeates apart from great apes are considered at the moment. I am a private breeder and have excellent connections for parrots but am reluctant to bring them into a zoo setting as there will always be the question of origin if they are to be included in breeding programmes. As for research I am currently doing studies on several diets for specialised parrot species with a greater emphasis on south american species and also on enrichment as a means of accustoming species to the presence of people to help with breeding programmes for several avian species

This puzzles me.

you have the knowhow to get some of the species wanted, but are reluctant to use them. For a reason that is quite acceptable.

yet you ask for animals on a forum that is mostly for zoo-fanatics and not the zoos themselves.

to me it seems that all, or at least most of the animals you might get your hands on through this medium have the same "problem" as your parrots do.

of course several of the animals you're looking for don't have EEP's or ESB's, but on the other hand they shouldn't be that difficult to come by from other zoos. so I'm quite intrigued to know if you have tried contacting other zoos and what the responses were.
 
I have asked to have my mollucans to be included in the studbook as well as a friend wanted to include his mexican military and lilacine amazons and the answer was that due to the unknown history of the birds they cannot be included. I can understand the risk of the military being crossed with another subspecies and maybe the lilacines but not the mollucans. Apparently with an unknown lineage she saiid there would be too many problems to include them as they would have to be classed as related to most of the population. We have applied to other zoos and most wont reply untill or BIAZA membership is complete. Final inspection end of November. Some zoos said they had no surplus and am waiting for more to get back. We are asking all avenues at the moment as the season is over and want to begin searching and creating new enclosures for new species. When I joined on this forum I knew that some members were either keepers or had close ties with zoos. I have also asked several other people and sites to try and come up with as broad a list of speceies as possible
 
there are several species on your "wanted-list" that aren't a part of EEP or ESB, and I know about half of those are available at private breeders or through commercial channels.

but those same animals are often on the surpluslist of many zoos, so I find it strange you get negative response or even none at all.
