Thx heaps Kiang, l laughed and cried.

1986 first mother reared gorilla in captivity? This is not correct.

In 1980 J Aspinall published an article. "The husbandry of gorillas in captivity" [thx GL]

"Quote" "AT the moment it can be said that we have bred 7 and lost 8- hardly much room for complacency but enough for hope as now the mothers have learned the art of raising thier own babies: of the 7 infants, only the oldest two are orphaned" Quote

Dam American "biggest best and first"........

First mother reared Gorilla in captivity was Jambo, born at Basel Zoo in Switzerland 1961. Several other zoos had mother-reared infants before Howletts started breeding and quite a few of Howletts early babies had to be handraised too.

The video says Columbus received two young gorillas whereas it was actually three. The first shots on the video are Christina & Christopher (not Colo's father Baron-he was already about five years older than Christina) Christopher was later sent to Basel where, as Stephi, he became the father of several young Gorillas, including Jambo above.

I read that Colo actually escaped the other day... a door was left open and she wandered out but didn't get out of the building into the zoo grounds, and she was enticed back quite quickly I think.

Yes, Colo did escape the other day - but she just wandered around the building and was lured back into her exhibit.

What a interesting video thanks for posting it :D

You should try and get the book 'Gorillas in our midst, the Story of the Columbus Zoo Gorillas' by Jeff Lyle. It was published in the USA of course. Some of the photos from this video are in the book too and its a pretty comprehensive summary of the history of Gorillas at Columbus Zoo.
