Monarto Safari Park colobus births

its a bit like that sometimes!!

i think melbourne now has a kikuyuensis male and mostly purebred group of guereza females and their hybrid offspring.

unfortunately the colobus program has been "downgraded" not that really means anything....

What is the current definition of 'downgraded'? Does this mean that the studbook now just monitors the population and the Primate TAG doesn't 'encourage' collections to hold colobus? If so there doesn't seem to be many Old World monkey species programs that are encouraged these days... Sulawesis and De brazzas have gone by the wayside. Only Francois langur off the top of my head. Madness when you consider that importing primates into Australia is 'relatively' easy.

Really l was under the impression that it is actually a long drawn out process. With the word easy definatley not associated with it.

Easy, that is, in comparison with other types of animals.

Because there is such a dearth of ungulates, exotic birds etc. Australia should have a much better representation of cats (large and small) and primates than it does.

I agree. In the 80s and 90s, between the four big zoos I can recall seeing or working with (not including current species and off the top of my head) patas monkey, hanuman langur, purple-face langur, gelada, talapoin, hoolock gibbon, stump-tailed macaque, chacma baboon, olive baboon, red-handed tamarin, slender loris, senegal and thick-tailed bushbaby, and douroucouli. Now I fully accept that not all these species could be preserved in managed populations in Australia, but it is a hell of alot of species to lose with few additions in that time.

I'm sure a similar list of carnivores could be produced...

Same with hoofstock and some birds.
E.g. there are not many nilgai, dwarf forest buffalo and many other species and a lot have disappeared e.g. alpine chamois.
