Ok today there are squirels and elephant shrews back in the exhibit.

given the fact the squirrels and elephant shrews are both lifeticks and I am visiting Cologne soon!

How annoying that I missed them, but at least I saw the genets whilst they were onshow
At the end of January 4 Red river hogs ( 3 males, 1 female ) were born at Cologne - a first-breeding for the zoo !

Looks like a couple of belted Lemur have been born, with some cute photos on their facebook
Middle April a male Eastern ring-tailed vontsirawas born, This is the second one born at Cologne .

By the end of the summer the Tiger enclosure will be renovated. The Red panda will also get a new enclosure nearby.
More importantly they will finally start with renovating the S-America house in November. The house will be a walkthrough, with several adjacent enclosures. Monkeys, armadillos, sloths, birds and Geoffrey's cats will be among the inhabitants. Additionally a Jaguar enclosure will be build (three enclosures of 550+350+270 square meter that can be connected) and there are also plans for a walkthrough aviary for King vultures and Peccary. Finally the nearby Directors house will be renovated as well. All this will cost about 21 million euros and will be finished in 2020.
Unfortunately the last Goitered gazelles will be sent to Karlsruhe after continuous deaths... What will be kept next in their enclosure is still unknown...

Does Cologne still keep Bactrian deer? They seem to have been removed from the park map along with the gazelles.
(I'm visiting in two weeks, and I don't want to be late for any more animals now that the gazelles, honey badger and tree kangaroo are gone)

As for the tree kangaroo - I thought they only had one female left, and this Zoofreunde post claims one female Matschie's tree kangaroo died (and that Goodfellow's tree kangaroos will be the replacement?). Granted, my German skills are not exactly perfect...

- der Gehegetausch von Onagern und Zebras ist für dieses Jahr vorgesehen
- die zwei Jungtiere der Kropfgazellen im vergangenen Jahr verstarben leider, die Haltung wird aufgegeben (Abgabe der Tiere nach Karlsruhe), der Neubesatz für das Gehege steht noch nicht fest
- ein weibliches Matschie-Baumkänguru starb im Alter von 20 Jahren, man wird mittelfristig auf Goodfellow-Baumkängurus umsteigen müssen
- aktuell befinden sich hinter den Kulissen zwei Salzkatzen, sie werden in das umgebaute Südamerikahaus inkl. Außengehege umziehen
- die Stachelschweine wurden an Magdeburg abgegeben, da man den Platz für Vögel benötigt - die Haltung wurde somit beendet

That is the second animal that died last year and the reason why there is only one left. This post mentions they will have to switch to Goodfellow in the medium-long term (aka when the last individual dies).
They have planned on switching over some time ago. The remaining individuals are / were all in the 18-20 range of age. The youngest individual was sent to the US already some years prior to this. Now only 0.1 old left.
