Cologne Zoo Cologne Zoo News

That is the second animal that died last year and the reason why there is only one left. This post mentions they will have to switch to Goodfellow in the medium-long term (aka when the last individual dies).
Glad there's still one left, hope to see it next month!

What else is know so far from the zoo's masterplan

A few years ago they planned a dragon house for all the monitor species

The zoo announced that they have recently received a pair of Goodman's mouse lemurs from Zurich, which should soon go on-show in the enclosure in the back of the Madagascar house.

The former elephant enclosure will be remodelled into an enclosure for Ring-tailed lemur and Coquerel sifaka. Cologne will receive 1.1 Sifaka from the USA, another pair will go to Berlin and a third pair will also come to Europe.

Other recent news include a Banteng birth, the departure of the Kikuyu guereza and the opening of the new Red panda enclosure opposite the Tiger. The Bukhara deer will also leave the zoo, they have some problems with Tuberculosis.

Where is the former elephant enclosure?

I usually hate ZTL based enquiries but I was having a dig in the Colobus section and I noticed that Koln isn't currently listed as holding any species. Have they left?

I visited Cologne last weekend, which is always a delight. In the past two years the only new development was a new Red panda and a new Banteng enclosure, which is larger than I expected and could do with some extra hoofstock like Hog or Eld's deer... The Red panda enclosure is huge and could do with some Tufted deer mixed in, to bring some life....

In terms of collection there have been quite some changes, mostly positive. I remains astonishing how many rare reptile species are on display and in the freshwater aquarium section more and more focus is on breeding rare obscure species, mostly from SE Asia.

In terms of mammals there have been some noteworthy losses, including Goitered gazelle, Bukhara deer and Honey badger (fortunately), all these enclosures now stand empty. Goodman's mouse lemur are now on show in the small enclosure at the back of the Madagascar house, but as it is mostly a day time enclosure, try to visit early morning, when the lights are still turned off (though I still didn't see them then...). Hausa genet, Garnett's galago and Geoffrey's cat are all still off-show.

The bird collection got a boost with even more ducks (at least if feels like that). Notable other new species include Little bustard, Orange-bellied leafbird and Philippine scops owl (the latter 2 in the rainforest house). I also noted a new Bulbul species in the rainforest house, but I don't have a clue which species.

A sad start to 2019, 30-year old male Sun Bear Chica has been put to sleep after suffering a paralysis, leaving his mate and two daughters at the zoo

Did they finally start work on the South Americahouse ? I read an article that said work would start end of 2018.
