Columbus Zoo and Aquarium Columbus Zoo and Aquarium News -2016

Although I like the more "professional" look the new map has, I don't like it as a whole. As with many zoo maps now a days it makes the zoo seem very small in my opinion, and leaves out a lot of animals.

So are the sun bears already gone?

A single sun bear has been on exhibit all spring, so unless it died or was taken off exhibit in the last two weeks, the species is still on exhibit. As noted by others, the new map does not include all of species exhibited. I should be headed back to the zoo in the next few weeks, and I hope to talk to someone about the future plans for the sun bear exhibit.

That is very exciting news! The zoo has made some very interesting and exciting acquisitions over the past couple of years with painted storks, black-backed jackals, and now the Siberian musk deer!

Wow! I'm glad to be moving closer to Columbus, it's changed so much since I went last time. There'll be a lot of new species for me! Does anyone know if the Watering Hole is on a set rotation, or is it just random? The jackals are a must-see for me.

From my visits, there is no set day-to-day schedule at the Waterhole, besides the scheduled cheetah runs. You can always ask the docents or any keepers or other staff on the day of your visit and often get a better answer. However, all of the planned rotations (including the scheduled cheetah runs) are at the mercy of the weather (in bad weather, the cheetah runs are not held) and, to a lesser extent, the time it takes for the keepers to actually rotate the species (for example, herding the ostriches can be quite a lengthy process, as I've seen on two occasions).

I'm probably going back to the Zoo on Thursday, so I'll see if I can find anything else out. There might be a time (or times) when it's more likely to see a particular species, but in all my visits since the Heart of Africa has been open, I've still yet to see aardvark in the Waterhole (though I've seen every other rotating species at least once, as well as on seeing the ostrich and zebra from the main exhibit down in the Waterhole).

When are they going to start renovating the North American exhibits (if they haven't already) and which ones are slated to be renovated?

They have already started, the former black bear/otter exhibit, the grizzly exhibit, the cougar cage and the bobcat exhibit are being renovated

They have already started renovations. The exhibits being renovated are the former bobcat and cougar enclosures (soon to be a single larger exhibit for cougar) and the three large glass-fronted exhibits in the center of the exhibit, the first (formerly home to black bear, timber wolf, and most recently, sandhill crane) will be for bobcat, the second (former home to grizzly and brown bears) for the new black bears, and the third renovated for the otters which had been living there (but which have temporarily displaced the beavers and moved back into their old exhibit). As of my last visit a month or so ago, it seemed like much of the demolition work had been done on all of the exhibits. I hope to be back in the next week or so and check out the status of the construction.

"The Amur tiger cub triplets will make their debut at the tiger habitat located in Asia Quest today, June 7. They will be on view from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily as conditions allow. The cubs, Metis (male), Callisto (female) and Elara (female), were born in March and are named after Jupiter’s moons, as their father’s name is Jupiter. For the past two months, the cubs have been growing bigger and stronger in a behind-the-scenes denning area with their mother, Irisa"
