Columbus Zoo and Aquarium Columbus Zoo & Aquarium News 2024

FELIX the Barbados Black bellied Sheep has passed away at the age of nearly 15 years.
Columbus Zoo and Aquarium on Instagram: "It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of our beloved Barbados blackbelly sheep, Felix. He was more than just a sheep to us; he was a cherished member of our family here at the Columbus Zoo. Felix was truly one of a kind. At almost 15 years old, he was not only the oldest documented individual of his species, but he also possessed a warm and gentle spirit that touched the hearts of everyone who had the pleasure of meeting him. Always the friendliest of our sheep, Felix welcomed guests with open arms (and sometimes even donned a hat or two!). His deep "voice" never failed to bring a smile to our faces, and his gentle nature made him a favorite among even the smallest of children. In his later years, Felix battled severe osteoarthritis, and, despite our best efforts to manage his discomfort with medication, his condition continued to progress until it became clear that we could no longer keep him comfortable. Because of that, the incredibly difficult decision was made by his dedicated care team for euthanization. His loss leaves a significant void in our barn and in our hearts. He had a way of brightening even the darkest days with his presence, and his absence will be keenly felt by all who knew him. Felix may no longer be with us physically, but his legacy will live on in the memories he created and the lives he touched as an ambassador of his species. We’d like to recognize and thank Felix’s care and health teams in the North America region for their dedicated care and love over the years."

As already mentioned in the Seneca Park Zoo thread, 0.1 Grant's zebra, "Lydia", has been transferred to the Seneca Park Zoo, and 0.1 ostrich, "Echo", has been transferred to the Columbus Zoo in return. The latter transfer was made in response to the death of their other ostrich (0.1 "Blue") during introductions with the zoo's white rhino. This brings the zoo to 0.4 Grant's zebra (down from 0.7) and 0.7 ostriches (back up from 0.6).

i know the Columbus Zoo still have Holly, Paula, Cleo and Sophia and Lydia now calls Seneca Park Zoo home but any idea what happened to the other two mares that were with the 5?

According to this article, 1.1 slender-horned gazelles were born in February — a male named Sasquatch and a female named Nessie, as well as a 1.0 Dama gazelle named Patrick who was born in mid-March. Also, several Desert Grassland Whiptail lizards hatched on Jan. 20, and several Green Basilisks (or Jesus Christ lizards) hatched in February.

Construction fencing has gone up around the old rhino yard! Construction is projected to start soon on the conversion to an elephant yard.

He should return there later this year. Fingers crossed that he has successfully bred Phoebe, Sunny, or Rudy, or two, or even all three of them!
I can confirm that he has bred at least Sunny! Her, Sabu and Rudy are attached at the hip so to speak when together, so fingers crossed he has bred her as well! I will try to confirm with a docent on Thursday when I'm there again.

Additionally, the zoo will be holding a 50th birthday party for Connie the elephant soon. Docents were telling guests today so I figure it's okay to share here as well :)

Two of the zoo's Asian Elephants, 1.0 Hank and 0.1 Connie are moving to a new AZA Zoo this summer to make room for two bulls arriving from different facilities. Also, can confirm Sabu has bred with Phoebe, Sunny, and Rudy so fingers crossed for three successful births next year.
