From the zoo's Facebook-

We’re getting closer to unveiling a fantastic additional living space for our beloved Asian elephants! Construction is nearing completion, and the extra care going into each step will be worth it for both our elephants and guests alike.
Here’s what’s happening:
• Modifications to the elephant pool
• Enhanced space that includes time feeders, raised feeders, and other feeding strategies consistent with elephant natural history
An enhanced training area so guests can watch Animal Care interactions and have a special tour location
• Fences are going up, and signs are on their way
This additional habitat area will provide a spacious, enriching environment for our growing elephant herd, supporting conservation efforts for this endangered species and bringing guests even closer to our commitment to wildlife care and protection.

I was at the zoo last night for a Wildlights preview and got to see some of the construction progress! No photos since it was getting dark but things are looking lovely. I'll update with photos when I get the chance.
  • Covered viewing areas are being constructed in front of the wolf and bear exhibits, these areas look very spacious.
  • What I'm guessing is the holding building has begun construction in the Swan/aviary area
  • Otter exhibit keeps getting better and better, loving the detail.
  • Elephant exhibit looks great! Looks like they plan to place a shade structure over the area in the summer.
  • Additionally, new signage has been added to the outdoor elephant exhibits and officially all rhino signage is gone. Still some work to be done on expanding the rest of the indoor rhino area into the overall community room.

Going to Columbus for the first time in over 10 years next month. Are there any exhibits I shouldn't miss?
Asia Quest is a must-see, as is HOA (the lions usually are out even in cold weather). Definitely head to Congo to see the new Bonobo exhibit and go to North America to see it before phase two takes over.
I'd usually say Adventure Cove is a skip, but I think it is worth viewing in-person least once.

Had a very nice visit to Columbus today. The rain held off for the most part. The lights switched on about half way through the visit and it really made the zoo come alive.

Asia Quest
  • Only saw Pallas Cat indoors. I thought they had an outdoor exhibits as well.
  • Only saw one Asian Elephant.
  • Mexican Gray Wolf was in one of what I think were the smaller Tiger exhibits.
Congo
  • Okapi was a no show
Australia and the Islands
  • Everything except for the night house was closed off for Wildlights. A bit of a shame as I was excited to see Komodo Dragons
  • Binturong was off exhibit
Reptiles and Aquarium
  • Common Chuckwalla was in place of the Gila Monster.
Polar Frontier and North America
  • Didn't see the Polar Bears because the underwater viewing was closed and the indoor portion was being used for Santa.
  • Most of the exhibits in North America were empty, save for the Canadian Lynx and Moose.
Adventure Cove
  • Only saw the Harbor Seals and California Sea Lion. We skipped the rest since we had just arrived and were looking for food
  • Although from what I've heard on ZooChat we weren't missing much.

Pallas Cats do not have outdoor viewing. Just the two indoor exhibits, one of which closes during Wildlights. It also appears Johnson (the male elephant) is out later in the day, shame you missed Frankie! Yes the wolves are in one of the Tiger habitats temporarily during construction!
Binturong was off exhibit
The zoo's last non-ambassador Binturong passed away I belive a year or two ago.

There is also no indoor Polar Bear viewing. The indoor building is a play area and indoor arctic fox viewing, so you didn't miss too much!

This is Johnson, correct? He was the only one we saw. Even after checking the outdoor yards. I was secretly hoping to see Frankie.

Yep that's him! Afaik the herd rotates between the yards during the day, and currently at around 4-5 Johnson is in the main yard or the indoor yard depending on temperature. I've missed Frankie my last few visits at around that time as well!

Question for Columbus regulars, were there always Tigers in these two smaller exhibits? They seemed so lackluster compared to the main Tiger yard.

They've been used as extra holding yards for years, yes. Before that they housed the Zoo's lions before HOA opened. They strictly held tigers for a while when they were producing more cubs, but when things slowed down they held bachelor lions and Cheetahs too.

Penny, the female binturong passed away, but the zoo should still have their male, Paco. Sometimes you have to wait a few minutes for you eyes to adjust in the darkness as he's in a dark corner of his exhibit blending in.
