Columbus Zoo and Aquarium Columbus zoo news 2011

On the African Savannah project... Which land is being used for it? I've been Google-Earthing the zoo's unused property, and can't figure out a sensible way to connect it to the rest of the park.
We have been trying to figure out for months exactly where the Savannah land is going to be,it can be a bit confusing.

We really hope that considering the amount of species that the zoo cut out of Polar Frontier that the zoo keeps most of the animals that have been rumored to be included in the project. As of now the Savannah is to consist of Giraffes,Zebras,Gazelles,Hippos,Hyenas and African Elephants.Other rumored species are Olive Baboons and Black Rhinos moving from the Pachyderm Building to AF with Indian Rhinos moving in.The Savannah is going to be opening in phases.

This is an idea of ours and not something we have heard in any of the Savannah plans.Moving the African Lions out of their exhibit behind Asia Quest and into the new Savannah. The Zoo could then convert the old lion exhibit into a new Snow Leopard enclosure which would fit right into that areas geographic theme. The current lion exhibit is really one of the only bad exhibits at the zoo.Any thoughts on this?

I've heard they were planning to use the current lion exhibit's real estate to build a more AsiaQuest fitting cat enclosure (not necessarily the exhibit itself), and yes a snow leopard would fit perfectly. Why, though, do you say the current lion exhibit is "bad"? It's not the best looking, with a cage-like appearance, but the 2 yards are fairly large especially when only used by 3 (right? 3?) cats.

Actually, you're right on track! The lions will be moving to the African Savannah. I've heard that the area where the lion exhibit is now will become an exhibit for Amur Leopards, Snow Leopards, or Dholes.

I imagine that there will be a good variety of species in the African Savannah, as 70-acres is a lot of space for only a few species. The plans that I've seen have all included a menagerie of species. I just hope that they have still decided to do so.

What I liked about some of the former plans was that there were several savannahs for the hoofed animals. One plan easily had a half dozen savannahs, and another had several savannahs based around habitats, for example there was a "forested savannah", a "wet savannah", and a "dry savannah".

Also, the zoo has said that there is still enough room surrounding Polar Frontier for new species to be added in the future.

Guess your right calling the lion enclosure bad is a bit harsh. It's probably the fact that the enclosures are a bit narrow that makes them look a bit smaller than they really are.Still would have to say that in a awesome zoo like Columbus it is among one of their weaker exhibits.

@Kudu21 We are glad to hear that the zoo intends to include moving the Lions in their plans.Columbus is truly in a golden situation and well on their way to becoming truly a world class zoo.

It's also among their oldest.

This is what boggles my mind... I'm 26: Not old, by any stretch of the imagination. When I was a kid, the North America region and Lion (Lion/Tiger at the time) exhibits were the hottest, newest exhibits in the park. Now, they're by far the oldest. The pace at which Columbus has expanded and upgraded is impressive, and they've done so without sacrificing quality.

Completely agree with you.Columbus Zoo is truly a model of how a modern zoo should be run.Now make no mistake we completely understand that money is basically a non issue in Columbus, while this is not the case in many other zoos throughout the United States. As far as the North America Zone goes its still very good despite being the oldest area in the zoo.Again cannot say enough about what a wonderful zoo Columbus is it is easily our favorite of our local zoos that we visit on a regular basis.

Kiwi Population Grows At Columbus Zoo | NBC 4i
8 July 2011

Central Ohio residents have the rare chance to see a newly-hatched kiwi chick at the Columbus Zoo. A North Island brown kiwi chick is on display from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Zoo's Roadhouse nocturnal habitat.

The newest chick hatched on June 25 just three months after a male chick named Ariki was hatched.

The two-week-old chick, whose sex will be determined by DNA testing, is one of only six kiwis hatched in the last five years in North America. The Columbus Zoo is only the third zoo in North American to successfully hatch a kiwi chick since the first one hatched at Smithsonian's National Zoo in 1975.

going to the Colum Zoo for the first time tomorrow, anything i should know before i go?

During a visit to C BUS Zoo on tuesday I got the idea that I could probably get a good view of the land area to be used for the African Savannah from atop the zoo's highest waterslide in Zoombezi Waterpark portion of the zoo. This however was not the case as I was unable to really pinpoint this area.

Also have not seen the zoo's pair of Black Duiker's during four visits this year. They are still listed on ISIS,does any know if they are still at the zoo?

Team Tapir

The duikers have never been the most visable or photogenic animals. I can only remember seeing the Red-flanked Duikers a handful of times, and I've only seen the Black Duikers twice. However, I would turn to Reedstilt for the answer on whether or not the duikers are still at the zoo.

it is a pretty big exhibit and has many hidings spaces, Ive never seen the one at Cincy since it was put back on display

The Black Duikers were there a couple weeks ago. I've seen them most times I've been to the zoo (didn't see them last time, though).

Also, I wanted to ask: does anyone know what's going on with the construction at the Pheasant's Aviary and Bonobos' Exhibit?

I was also wondering what was going on with the Pheasant's exhibit. Any ideas anyone?

I drove to the parking lot of that church on the northeast side of the zoo to see if I could see anything going on construction wise but there was nothing noticeable.

It's amazing how much the zoo has changed since I first visit. Anyone know where I can find pictures from the late 80s/early 90s for comparison sake?

And if you're interested, I posted a few photos from Zoombezi Bay here: Zoombezi Bay’s Two New Waterslides | Coaster101

I'm not sure about what is going on with the Pheasant Aviary either. However, I may have the answer as to why the Black Duikers haven't been on exhibit. The zoo's duikers, Chelsea and Kringle, welcomed a little calf on July 6th!

Fishing cats born at zoo. Article says they are endangered, but fails to mention one of the biggest causes is destruction of the mangrove forests on the edge of rivers and bays to build shrimp farms. These have a lifespan of about six years before they are so polluted they are unusable and become a no-man's land while more mangroves are torn down for new ponds. This scourge of Asia is now spreading to the Amazon. Everyone on this forum needs to boycott shrimp and tell their friends to do the same.

Fishing cats, native to Asia, born at Ohio zoo - Taiwan News Online

I saw the Fishing Cats on their Facebook page this morning :) Exciting news indeed :)

I for one am a vegetarian, so the whole seafood issue is not a problem for me. I've heard of these issues with seafood before, and I've been encouraging my family to boycott seafood as well.

@mstickmanp- Thanks for the ZooBorns link, but I already posted about the duiker calf a week ago! :p
