Columbus Zoo and Aquarium Columbus Zoo News - 2012

Introductions between Asian Elephant females Connie and Phobee and male Hank (The Tank)have gone very well.

Although its still up in the air zoo staff is less confident that Indian Rhinos would be brought in to replace the Black Rhinos when they move to the African Savannah.Staff cites the fact that they have had much success with them at The Wilds. There is now talk of expanding the facilty to make it the largest breeding facilty for Asian Elephants in the country.

We can also confirm that 1.1 Sun Bears still reside at the Columbus Zoo

Here is the new updated species list for the recently renovated Asian Pheasant Aviary

Azur Winged Magpie,Western Cattle Egret,Derbyan Parakeet,White Crested Laughing Thrush,Impeyan (Monal)Pheasant,Ringed-necked Pheasant,Common(Northern)Shoveler,Chinese Hwamei,Magpie Goose,Golden Pheasant,Black Throated Laughing Thrush,Mountain Bamboo Partridge and Reeves Muntjak.

Thanks for yet another update on the Columbus Zoo, team tapir.

Connie is absolutely enamored with Hank, and she barely ever leaves him alone. She did not share the same relationship with Coco, so hopefully this is a good sign.

Though Indian rhinoceroses would be nice, I can understand completely why they wouldn't want to bring them in. To me, expanding the space for the hopefully expanding herd of Asian elephants sounds even better and makes more sense than the addition of rhinoceroses.

Thanks for the confirmation on the sun bears. I figured they were, but I just wanted to make sure.

The new species list for the pheasant aviary is fantastic, and it is so nice to see so many more species of birds added. I do, however, have two questions about the renovation; are you still able to walk through the aviary, and were the muntjacs moved from the white-naped crane enclosure, or are these additional muntjac?

Yes you are still able to walk through the aviary and these are additional muntjak and they are still located in the front of Asia Quest however we don't have numbers as to how many are in each location.

While watching some videos on YouTube we came across this old one when the zoo had pandas in the current bonobo exhibit. We liked it and wanted to share:

I remember waiting for hours in line to finally get a chance to see the pandas through those big glass windows. When you finally got up there, the bears were usually asleep.

That's a great find, team tapir; thanks for sharing. I'm heading north tomorrow for a long overdue visit to the Columbus Zoo. Photos and any news, changes, and/or observations will follow.

According to the zoos facebook its new Amur Tiger cubs can be seen on most days from 12-4 pm in the Conservation Education Building :)

In that article it said The zoos Black Rhinos will be a part if this exhibit so I guess that means the zoo will try to mix the rhino with the hoof stock(never have seen black rhinos mixed), the main savanna is split into two parts one holding rhinos the other with the hoof stock or you will be able to see the current black rhino exhibit from the new area. Also I hope the article was not lying about the zoo getting wilde*beest. It sounds like the watering hole exhibit, Number 3 on the map, will be a rotational exhibit.

Thanks for the article Zooplantman.

According to a picture of the map posted by Jack Hanna, the rhinos will be in the upper-left portion of the veldt.

Did you end up visiting Kudu21? I didn't see you post anything new forums or any new pics. thks matt

It looks awesome. I hope there are Wildebeest. When they were planning Trails the reports mentioned "Wildebeest Impala and Kudu". The Kudu were in place but left, Wildebeest won't happen, and I am sure Impala was just a design hold over because CLR must really like Impalas (see Giants at Dallas.

I hope the cheetah exhibit is setup like Cincinnati's where you can see them run at top speed (minus their horrible guest flow problems when a show is over).

It looks like the African Veldt will end up housing the Black Rhinos, but what else? Maybe some of the larger herbivores of Africa, like the Cape Buffalo and Giant Elands that Jusko was just talking about.

I have no such queries about the meerkats, lions, or cheetahs, but I do have some things to say about the large mixed exhibit. What are the confirmed animals so far? From all the information we've gathered so far, it looks like it will include giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, ostriches, gazelles, and impala, all in that one enclosure. I personally would like it if they included Greater Kudu, but that's just a preference.

As for the monkeys, it will probably end up being Olive or Chacma baboons, but I'm not sure. I myself would like to see Green Vervet Monkeys, but that's also a preference.

The final things I wanted to talk about were hippos and warthogs. These were both included in the first layout sketch of the exhibit, but are not in the new one. I hope they include them, because they are both unusual and little known creatures, and they would both go with the theme of the African Savannah. I think people should know more about them.
