Columbus Zoo and Aquarium Columbus Zoo News - 2012

It will be interesting to see if the zoo will go back to keeping "Reticulated" Giraffes or if it will instead pick up "Rothschild" and/or Masai Giraffes, seeing as The Wilds keeps all three. The Wilds has also recently received several ostriches, but I do not know if these are future Safari Africa residents or not. It would not surprise me if they are, however.

POWELL, Ohio - Two men were arrested early Friday morning for allegedly breaking into the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.

According to investigators, Kyle Pierce and Sir Jaredd Branner were found inside the zoo, located at 4850 W. Powell Rd., at about 1:30 a.m.

When investigators attempted to stop the pair, Pierce, 21, and Branner, 18, attempted to flee, 10TV’s Tino Ramos reported.

Zoo officials said that no animals were harmed but that they were checking exhibits as a precaution.

Pierce and Branner were both charged with criminal trespass and disorderly conduct.

Just received my summer 2012 copy of Beastly Banner, the Columbus Zoo membership magazine and was pleasantly surprised to find a rendering of Safari Africa! Listed species include: meerkat, lions, cheetahs, camels, monkeys, zebras, and giraffees. The area will feature camel rides, a zipline, and girafee feeding. Opening is 2014. Not as large as we've heard but still cool, hoping this is just phase 1.

This probally is just phase one because I was watching jack Hannahs TV show and he was talking to a person walking on the site of the African section and the employ said that the section would be 120 acres. Then they talked about a ride and that is probally the camel ride. Plus these are just commmon and most popular animals. And about the cheetahs I asked a volunteer after seeing a show were they brough out a cheetah that was on leash and talked about how the cheetah and her sister were born at the clevland zoo and they sent the two females to columbus and the male stayed at clevlend I asked why they did not have an exhibit and they said that they travel around with the zoo so they would not be their often i also saw jack hannah's traveling show in illinois and they had a cheetah with them that I presume was one of the sisters so what I am getting to is that unless they get a new cheetah or stop traveling with the cheetahs the exhibit will be empty quite often.

The Columbus Zoo now manages the Wilds. I'm sure the zoo can find a few spare cheetah at the Wilds to house at the zoo.

Also, the layout of these new plans don't really offer a way to provide access for future phases, unless they are going to be built below this development and behind polar frontier. It seems that if they were to build out the remaining land towards the North, they would have to cut right through the middle of this exhibit in the future.

The Columbus Zoo has alot of surounding land. If you see the map of the zoo a road runs right through the middle of the zoo that you go under. so even if a road looks like a boundry the zoo might just make a tunnel under the road.

currently toronto zoo is building there eurasia exhibit with pandas and the plans dont have dholes anymore. Im wondering since the wilds has dholes from toronto zoo if the rest of them at toronto zoo will go to the wilds and by 2014 when the lions leave there exhibit in asia quest if that will become a dhole exhibit. that would be awesome.

I wasn't looking at the roads at all. I know the zoo doesn't own much to the East of this development. However they own a lot to the immediate North and South of this area. Of course, most of the zoo's service areas are to the West. Unless they plan on relocating its service facilities somewhere and then expanding onto this property. Expanding Safari Africa to the South would make the most sense. However in past masterplans this area was for South America or Madagascar.

Expansion to the North also makes a lot of sense, but only if the remaining phases were viewed only from a safari truck/van ride. In my opinion, it wouldn't be wise or fiscally responsible to spends millions on this exhibit to later place a path straight through the middle of the new exhibit to reach any further phased expansions of Safari Africa.

I hope that they would redo the exhibit so it is one large exhibit with a rock wall in the back so you can not see the anoying road.
