Columbus Zoo and Aquarium Columbus Zoo News - 2012

Thayne Maynard anyone?

Jack Hanna is director emeritus for the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and The Wilds and Thayne Maynard is the director of the Cincinnati Zoo, perhaps the best zoo in the world. So what do you two do?:D
I noticed some things said by Jungle Jack during the program that didn't really sit right with me. One example was when he said that the Siberian Lynx was Extinct in the Wild and that you don't find more than a few Extinct in the Wild species out there. I don't know about you guys, but I've seen at least three (Pere David's Deer, Kihansi Spray Toad, Partula Snail) in the last year and a couple that are pretty close.

I have to say, they probably have some pretty tough jobs and they're just Human so just because they're high in the public eye doesn't mean they can't make mistakes. We all make mistakes in this field (especially in this field) from now and again.

Exactly. I don't see how a few mistakes in a job like that can get you branded as a "dufus".

Gee, tough crowd.

Watch a few Cincinnati Zoo videos and we'll see Thane saying the Sumatran Rhino is the rarest rhino on Earth, and bragging about the Cincinnati Zoo's records, even some that aren't even true.

I think jbnbsn just has little room for nonsense and can easily blow a fuse (it's what happens when you get old). Then again, how old can he be when he's still going to school. In a PM he told me about the stuff he's involved in right now and I'd have little room for error if I was him right now but I still think calling him a dufus is a little extreme. *Still, branding an animal as Extinct in the Wild is a pretty large mistake. I'm a Thayne Maynard fan. I like how interactive he is with the public and how involved he is with advertisment and such.

*Maybe saying they're Extinct in the Wild is his way of pushing the public to try to save more species. Stretching the truth slightly for the greater good.

I agree, Thayne is a little too concentrated on promoting his zoo 24/7 to get many facts right, but I haven't noticed too much of anything wrong with Jack.

Yeah that's wrong but what are the untrue records. Is it a new video because I'll just go watch it now. But look at what I said on my last post for Jack.

I have seen Jack Hanna live and on late night shows and when I have seen him he makes many many errors and forgets the species he is showing. He also exaggerates alot. Thayne just brags all the time on how great Cincinati is and pointless records like having the world's fastest cheetah.

How does this have to do with jack hanna being accurate on his facts? You do not see poeple complaining you are young. I personaly think jbnbsn89 is one of the most intelligent people on this web site and provides many useful facts. Maybe you can learn a little from him. It seem as you have taken over this web site and are filling all the forums with spam.

This is a zoo news thread. No need for unnecessary tantrums.

ThylacineAlive did not strike out at him. We all agree Jbnbsn is an asset to the site, and nobody said otherwise.

Now, since that jabber is over, can we proceed back on the subject?

I think Thayne is much better, I've even run into a couple of times and he is a nice guy, I haven't seen anything of Jack Hanna everywhere except hearing about in on early morning shows (as a teenager, I would never wake up that early). Thayne and other keepers are extremely interactive with most of the more famous species. Every time I usually see keepers feeding and giving the elephants their daily bath. Back on point, TropicalWorld54, I haven't heard Thayne talk much about the zoo's records but more just about facts about the species. What's exactly wrong with mentioning that we have Sarah, the world's fasted cheetah? I hear that Jack Hanna is more famous, but rarely even hear from him myself.

1) I agree with the others in we should really get this thread back on track but I have a couple of other things to say.
2) I agree Jack has forgotten some pretty easily identified animals but if he exaggerates on how endangered an animal is it might just be to get people to want to take more action to save them.
3) I know jbnbsn is one of the smartest people on this site, I've said that before. He has helped me many times and I like the guy/gal. I am learning from him and other members.
4) Yes I'm young. So? The purpose of me on this site is to learn things and I've learned quite a bit so far. I would of thought all my animal-related questions would have prooven that.

In an attempt to redirect this thread, there is a strong possibility that one of the zoo's gorillas is pregnant.

Well, don't I feel loved :).

The point I was making is that people who work in zoos, by and large, have very little respect for Jack. The loveable Jack you see on TV is not the real Jack. What you see is a TV persona (not unlike Stephen Colbert). I've worked with several Hanna disciples. It's all about showmanship, not about the animals. You can tell the public anything you want as long as you are entertaining.

I don't really agree with this. Jack Hanna is well respected for what he has accomplished. When he spoke at the AZA Conference a couple of years ago 2100 attendees gave him a standing ovation

And these sad Internet-armchair quarterback evaluations of Jack Hanna and Thane (not Thayne) Maynard are a sad reflection on the people posting. You have seen these men on TV, you have run into them at an event; they are doing their jobs. You do not know them nor what their skills and qualities are. Accept that ignorance and skip the judgements. I doubt that a single one of the people posting opinions about them could begin to accomplish what they have or will be remembered for their professional skill.

Bravo Zooplantman! Jack Hanna, regardless of his outsize persona, is an absolute legend in the zoo industry and revered by many. I can personally see how some folks compare him to the late, great Steve Irwin...but that should not be a detriment but rather an honour. Many ZooChatters will never accomplish even a tiny sliver of success like Jack Hanna or Thane Maynard.

My view doesn't come from TV, but rather comes from people who have directly worked with him. The general response I get is "never again."

Well, sure, and many people would say that of a great number of former bosses. I can't speak for what sort of manager or director he is, only that in general he seems to be respected generally within the larger zoo community.
