Columbus Zoo and Aquarium Columbus Zoo News - 2012

I'm sure Jack Hanna is a well meaning guy. There's a lot of responsibility that goes along with being the public face of American zoos, and you can't please everyone. These things aside, I have a major axe to grind with Jack when it comes to his alliance with HSUS and their efforts to end private keeping of reptiles.

I'm not a citizen of Ohio and I don't keep any large constrictors, but Jack's philosophies and the philosophies of his associates when it comes to keeping reptiles outside of zoos is pretty aggressive and far-reaching IMO. I saw him say in one particular interview that no reptile belongs in private hands outside of a zoo. This is rubbish.

To boot, I've watched him defend the captive keeping of cetaceans vehemently on CNN after the keeper was killed by the orca at Sea World Orlando a couple of years back. So, in this man's view, it's okay to keep highly intelligent and demonstrably dangerous orcas in tanks, yet I should be a Lacey Act felon for keeping a corn snake or bearded dragon.

Apples to oranges perhaps, but taking a lassiez-faire approach in defense of marine parks while advocating dropping the hammer on the average reptile keeper seems hypocritical. It makes him look like a shill for one industry and the pawn of a special interest group (HSUS).

Ok I know many of us want to express our views on Jack Hanna and Thane Maynard but can't you see Kudu is trying to gravitate this thread back to its main focus. I we want to talk about our views on zoo directors and personalities then someone make a seperate thread for it in the Zoo Cafe and let's bring this thread back to its main purpose please.

Yeah, mea culpa on that one. It just seemed like it was going around in this thread. I shouldn't have taken the bait.

Are the parents once again Anakka and Casode?

Has anyone been to the zoo in the past couple of weeks to see the polar bears? I'm curious to hear about the interaction with the new male and the female sisters. I am also curious about the male adjusting to underwater viewing for visitors. His past zoos did not have that so it must have been interesting to see people for the first time when he takes a swim underwater.

According to the zoo's Facebook page, they set a new attendance record of over 30,000 guests this past Saturday for Wildlights.

The zoo has put up a new video of Nanuq out with Aurora and Anana in their exhibit in Polar Frontier:

Today was a holiday enrichment day within the Asia Quest department. The elephants received pine trees and the tigers and sun bears received wrapped boxes filled with treats.
