Columbus Zoo and Aquarium Columbus Zoo News - 2014

So they are going to have Hybrid Complex and Masai Giraffe? I assume on different exhibit space of course.

These look Reticulated.

Yes, they will house a breeding herd of Masai giraffes and a bachelor herd of Reticulated-type hybrids. There are three separate exhibit spaces that the giraffes can possibly have access to, and the barn can hold up to 15 individuals, so there will definitely be enough space to house the two separate herds.

The Lions are set to move into their new exhibit in 2 weeks and it has been confirmed to us by a Carnivore keeper that the old lion exhibit will be converted into a snow leopard exhibit.Columbus currently has 2 snow leopards that are part of their Jack Hannah Promotion/Education Dept and are looking to acquire 2 more.

Renovations are underway on both front yards of the zoos Pachyderm Building and are going to be used for the zoos Black Rhinos.

Clouded Leopards are no longer on exhibit in Asia Quest and have been replaced by 2 Amur Leopards. The Zoos Sun Bears will be back on exhibit outdoors once the weather starts to warm up.

Fencing along the pedestrian path in North America between the Mexican Wolves and Bison/Pronghorn exhibits is being replaced.

Does anyone know what or have a layout if the interior of the pachyderm building? Specifically the elephant holding portion?

I haven't heard or seen anything official from the zoo but in DublinLife magazine it says the Heart of Africa grand opening is Thursday, May 1.

Zoo Staff I spoke with yesterday says they are hoping for May 22nd and based on the looks of the site currently there seems to be alot of work yet to be completed.

South American and Madagascan zones were once part of the zoos masterplan on its current property. It now appears that those areas have become the off site downtown satellite zoo/rain forest. What are some of your thoughts regarding whether or not you would have preferred these exhibits have been built in Powell at the current zoo or do you like the downtown idea ?

Do not like species from different geographical areas being mixed together. An exhibit with lemurs in the trees and giant otters on the ground is dumb. That is our opinion but the concepts seem cool.Just hope they would consider the geography.

I really hope Columbus eventually builds a Rainforest Building. All big zoos need one, plus Columbus doesn't have any anteaters or tapirs, which are personal favorites of mine.

It has one long rectangular stall right when you walk in, with a small pool and a big fake tree. That ones for the Sumatran Elephants. Then, to the right, diagonal to the elephant stall, there is a smaller one with a dirt floor and a water trough. It might have also had a mud pit. That was for the Black Rhinos. At least that's what I can remember.

They already do, its in the Australia section.

Its a nocturnal house.A very good nocturnal house but would not call it a Rainforest exhibit. Some of the animals residing there are rainforest animals but would still not consider this a rainforest exhibit.

They had naked mole rats in a rainforest building? There a desert animal. Anyway, what else was in there? What other animals did it have?

In case you didn't look through the article Milwaukee Man posted, here's the pdf highlighting the zoo's long-range plans - including a seal/sea-lion exhibit at the entrance, new aquatic facilities in the Shores region, relocation of Congo Expedition, renovation of the current Congo Expedition into a Southeast Asian-themed region, and renovation of North America into "The Americas" to include species from North, Central, and South America.
