I don't get why all of this flip-flopping is really necessary. All of the exhibits that they are switching up are fine exhibits as is. I'd rather see them concentrate on making the new Africa section more complete with savannah, desert and wetland species.

I'm sure it will be terrific if it comes to fruition, but it seems like an unnecessary expenditure of funds.

I don't get it either but then again its coerced tax money not like they are putting up the funds themselves.

Why are there photos of siamang and asian small clawed otters under Americas? Who designs these things?

The only exhibit that we would be in favor of replacing would be the Orangutans. We recently spoke with a primate keeper who told us that she sat on the planning committee for Islands and the exhibit never materialized the way many zoo staff had hoped it would.Built in 2003 the exhibit just does not work for either the Orangs or the visitor. Its obvious Columbus realizes this.In the entire Islands Zone the Roadhouse (Nocturnal House) /Island Aviary and the Asian Small Clawed Otter exhibits are good and the rest of the area is average at best.

It looks like in this plan, the bonobo exhibit has been converted into an orangutan exhibit. It seems like a good idea, but its going about it all wrong. The drawing shows the viewing area is placed in the center of the exhibit and proposes a rock wall around the outer edge as a barrier. I would imagine it would be cheaper to not cut down the mature trees in the center that make the exhibit great and not erect a large rock wall in place of the great viewing areas that are already there.

There are no longer any mature trees in the center ! They have been wiped out from invasive Emerald Ash Borer. The zoo has done there best to to maintain the exhibit by building artificial structures such as sway poles. But its no where near as good as it was when the trees were there.

I know ZooChatters like to second guess and redesign zoos, which is fun

I will remind us all that this document appears to be a strategic plan to drum up support for the levy and more funding. As such, it is not an exhibit design document. The exhibits... when and if they are realized... will likely not resemble what is shown. They need to be designed.

Compare any exhibit from any Master Plan or Strategic Plan (from any zoo) with the final exhibit and you will see how much they can change (in fact, planned orang exhibits can even become wildfowl aviaries or rhino yards: anything is possible until the exhibit is built! :p )

Now, on with the commenting.

Yeah, after I posted, I looked in the gallery and saw your post on the exhibit picture. That is unfortunate that they lost those trees. They looked pretty good four years ago when I visited. I hadn't even heard of Emerald Ash Borer at that point.

A lot of mudslinging is going on involving Issue 6 in Columbus Ohio.Much more than we've seen in past levy renewals in Columbus as well as past elections in Toledo and Cleveland. Its going to be very interesting whether the zoo gets this to pass.

Two male colobus monkeys have been born at the zoo - the first, named Dr. Leonard Hofstadter, was born on May 1st and the second, named Howard Wolowitz, was born on May 2nd.

Wonder whether next spring will see the arrival of Raj, Penny, Amy or Bernadette. You need to have the whole group. I love when zoo's pick a theme for their babies names. My favourite was a littler of Warthogs in Toronto named Ham, Bacon, Sasuage and Porkchop. Those kinds of things are always fun.
