Absolutely incredible that a zoo that for a zoo that started in 1927 its oldest exhibit was built in 1984.

I don't get why all of this flip-flopping is really necessary. All of the exhibits that they are switching up are fine exhibits as is. I'd rather see them concentrate on making the new Africa section more complete with savannah, desert and wetland species.
I'm sure it will be terrific if it comes to fruition, but it seems like an unnecessary expenditure of funds.
The only exhibit that we would be in favor of replacing would be the Orangutans. We recently spoke with a primate keeper who told us that she sat on the planning committee for Islands and the exhibit never materialized the way many zoo staff had hoped it would.Built in 2003 the exhibit just does not work for either the Orangs or the visitor. Its obvious Columbus realizes this.In the entire Islands Zone the Roadhouse (Nocturnal House) /Island Aviary and the Asian Small Clawed Otter exhibits are good and the rest of the area is average at best.

It looks like in this plan, the bonobo exhibit has been converted into an orangutan exhibit. It seems like a good idea, but its going about it all wrong. The drawing shows the viewing area is placed in the center of the exhibit and proposes a rock wall around the outer edge as a barrier. I would imagine it would be cheaper to not cut down the mature trees in the center that make the exhibit great and not erect a large rock wall in place of the great viewing areas that are already there.
There are no longer any mature trees in the center ! They have been wiped out from invasive Emerald Ash Borer. The zoo has done there best to to maintain the exhibit by building artificial structures such as sway poles. But its no where near as good as it was when the trees were there.

Damisi, one of the zoo's okapis, is pregnant, and the zoo has put up a video of her receiving an ultrasound:
