Columbus Zoo and Aquarium Columbus Zoo News 2021

According to social media, Phoebe's 8-Week Old calf is beginning to venture outside! Fingers crossed for outside viewing opportunities' in the near future seeing as I hate having to wait to view it inside and here's to hoping we get a name for the little rascal in the next couple weeks. I'm growing anxious!

I have some name suggestions that all start will the letter B because that's how Columbus names Phoebes other sons

1. Bali (Powerful)
2. Basu (Wealth)
3. Basav (Lord of Bulls)

Part of me has a feeling they're on the road to naming him "Jack" in honor of Mr.Hanna. I dont hate the idea but... I think we are all thinking the same thing.

Great news. Unfortunately for the elephant cow Phoebe, the calf is again a bull and she still won't start family.

Yes, these many male offspring, regardless of the species, are incredibly annoying.:( But there are two solutions to this terrible problem: 1. cloning.:) 2. no more breeding of any animal in captivity.:):):).

Especially for poor Phoebe, this new bull calf must be a real nightmare. If she had known beforehand that she would have a son again, she would certainly not have let herself be mated. But there is hardly a zoo in the USA that allows natural mating - surely Phoebe was gently coaxed into having her calf. No wonder it's another unwanted bull. Put to sleep it and try again. Even purely mathematically there must be a female at some point.:)

Good luck, Phoebe...;)

It's a big shame Ellie died. But this boy would probably not be alive, because they would wait another years with another calf.;)

That is definitely not true. Natural breeding is their first choice, why would any zoo want to spend so much money on an AI procedure. AI is used because either bulls like Hank at Columbus aren’t natural breeders or cows like Bluebonnet at Fort Worth are scared of bulls and AI is the only option for them to breed. Houston, Syracuse, OKC, EAF, St Louis, etc all have healthy naturally breeding herds.

Yes it’s unfortunate that her calf is a bull but that’s awfully rude to say he’s unwanted and that he should be put to sleep. Columbus worked pretty hard for this calf, spending so much money on not one but two AI procedures and they lost Ellie which I’m sure was devastating for both Phoebe and her keepers.

Also, I very much doubt Phoebe thinks her little boy is a “real nightmare.” In fact, I think she’s probably enjoying having another calf to raise since she really hasn’t had this opportunity since Beco was born in 2009.

I don't think Jack Hanna ever really tried to hide where the cats came from, it was more along the lines of no one asked. I went to see an educational program of his in Kakauna, WI several years ago, and when asked where the animals he was showing came from he admitted it was Timbavati Wildlife Park.

Pheobe and her calf now have the option of going out into their yard or staying inside for viewing. I still can't believe they have not named the calf 9 weeks in.

The elephant calf has been named Frankie:

Columbus Zoo's Asian elephant calf now has a name

The zoo said an anonymous donor family chose the name to honor their late mother who passed away last November. She was known by her family as "Granny Franny."

The zoo said the family is honored to help name the elephant calf to honor their mother and to contribute to elephant conservation worldwide.
