Columbus Zoo Elephant Program Update
The zoo currently has no plans to breed Sunny and Rudy because they want to wait until they are older. It sounds like the zoo will bring in a new bull when they are ready to breed rather than using Hank or Beco.
Connie will not be introduced to the main herd, instead she will remain with Hank. The Columbus Zoo decided this because they did not want to stress her out with the calf and they did not want to ruin her and Hank’s bond. So now the zoo has three groups of elephants. The first group or the main herd is Phoebe, Frankie, Sunny, and Rudy. The second group is Hank and Connie. Lastly Beco is by himself.
The small elephant yard next to the Indian Rhinoceros has now became Beco’s yard while the other elephants will be rotated in the main yard and on-display indoor area.
