It should be noted he was the first animal to pass away due to COVID at the facility.
To be exact, he passed due to pneumonia, which he was more susceptible to because of having had COVID. Also, it should be noted that he " had been on long term treatment for chronic underlying illnesses, which made him more susceptible to this virus.", so the circumstances are not as clear cut as it seems on the surface.

The zoo today announced the passing of Sprout the male Tasmanian devil on June 27, 2022. He was born on April 26, 2018.

Two female Polar bears may be pregnant following AI:

Columbus Zoo, Aquarium helps save polar bears through artificial insemination

Anana and Aurora, two female polar bears at the Columbus Zoo, were artificially inseminated (AI) on March 17, 2022.

We are cautiously optimistic that these AI attempts are successful; it would have a significant impact for the future of the species.

I just booked a flight to Columbus for next month, I am super excited about going here. I will only be in the city for a day and a half, but I am going to use the first 1/2 day at Zoombezi and the second full day for the zoo. If there is time on the first day I may hop over to the zoo part for a shorter time as well.

What are the "Must see" at this zoo? I know markhor, bonobo, manatee, and the artic areas, but otherwise, is there anything I need to make a priority?

I'd personally recommend the Roadhouse. It's one of my favorite nocturnal houses, and it has some decently rare animals like Kiwis, a Wombat, and Feathertail Gliders.

I personally like the Australia area, especially the nocturnal house. Kiwi and wombat are both fairly rare in the States. Koalas are kind of uncommon as well. Devils are always fun if they have any left. I’ve only seen Nene there in 50+ zoos, but I’m not sure how much you care about waterfowl lol. I’m pretty sure they still have moose. I’d add those to the list.

I think the whole zoo is quite doable in a day. If I had to prioritize I’d go for markhor, manatee, Australia, moose. Nene are right by the manatee.

The whole zoo is easily doable in one day, especially on a weekend or Friday, when they are open a whopping 9 hours! I don't think you need to worry about prioritizing certain areas, especially if you are potentially visiting over 2 days.

But, the most must-see areas (IMO) are Asia Quest, North America, Polar Frontier, Congo Expedition, and the Roadhouse.

Thanks for the tips everyone! I forgot about the kiwi and wolverines - those are a must see for me. The nene are a favorite species, but we have those in Tampa so not a priority. Otherwise I just want to take in the habitats, that is more my thing than specific species. I like zoo design and how it wall works together, and Columbus is known for habitat design.

Check out my species list from May of this year! That’ll be sure to help you gauge what you want to see while there :).

you will probably still see the nene since you pass there habitat on the way to the Australian area (they share their habitat with Flamingos).
