Columbus Zoo and Aquarium Columbus Zoo Updates for 2009

Oh thats to bad, but maybe some other species will have babies soon

Animal Birth

Last night, three African Lion cubs were born, the first at the zoo since 1985! We are being very cautious at this point because Asali is a first time mom but she is showing great maternal instincts. As soon as I hear genders I will repost. Pray for girls!

Two transfers also occurred this week and I will post further info in about a week.

New Gorilla

Two important transfers happened this week:

First, Lyle, our male Drill, was sent to Atlanta in a last ditch attempt to breed him before he passes away. I'm fairly certain he isn't related to any of the girls down there so the US might see a drill birth in the future.

Second, a new gorilla arrived on Wednesday. He is Oliver, one of the most genetically valuable gorillas in the US because both his parents are WB and he is the only successful pairing of Tunuka and Barney. He is also deaf, which will present a very interesting challenge for our keepers. He is from Gorilla Haven. We are hoping, in addition to getting a breeding recommendation for him with some of our current girls, the SSP might transfer some more females for him to breed with to us.

Glad he can become a leader of a group.

Glat to hear Lyle still has a chance at breeding (Wonder if AI might be an option?)

Also good to hear about the new gorilla. Hopefully we get a few babies out of him (I have heard of his father, he was originally at Toronto Zoo)

Just a question, are they still trying to breed Casode and Anakka? It been over a year since they started trying so I'm shocked she has not become pregnant yet (Maybe they just aren't often breeders, some gorillas will breed up to three times a day!)

Yes we are still trying to breed Anakka with Cassie, and believe me, frequency isn't a problem. I just say give it a little more time.

I am SO sorry for this CBus01, I know you usually do the updates but I just found this info and I thought I should share it

-A male bornean sun bear named "Dibu" (ring a bell?) arrived recently from San Diego Zoo

-A female bornean sun bear named "Edwina" has also arrived/will arrive from Woodland Park Zoo

Dibu is the only successfully breeding bornean sun bear in North America (The world maybe even?) so this is pretty huge

Again, very sorry C-Bus

Oh you're fine ZooGoer2000. Here are a few more additional updates:

1) As already pointed out, the Sun Bear SSP has selected our facility to breed Bornean Sun Bears not Malayans. Our current Malayan pair are tentatively scheduled to go to Atlanta early next year. Edwina is not here yet but will be arriving very soon.

2) LA and Columbus have switched Komodo Dragon males, both of whom are recommended to breed. LA now has Buru and we have Mr. Lizard.

3) We recently moved a female Red Kangaroo to another facility and will be moving two male Caribbean Flamingos to San Antonio. Also, all six flamingo chicks are male (the chances of that occurring are like 1/60, fml). A female Red Panda, Hun-E, has been transfered to Cincy. One of our yearling male Markhors has left and the other will probably be leaving soon as well (he might have already). We will probably receive a breeding recommendation once they are gone. And our male Red Flanked Duiker has finally left for Memphis.

A great many transfers are still scheduled to happen, in addition to the preparation of Polar Frontier. 2009 is going to end with a bang at the Columbus Zoo and 2010 is going to be an awesome year!

What? His name is Mr. Lizard? I thought his name was Modo?

Anyways, Modo (or Mr. Lizard) will be missed, as he has been at the zoo for some time now. Hopefully he'll breed at Columbus, as he couldn't get our female pregnant, thus the change.

Modo is also very photogenic!:D

According to the Columbus Zoo twitter account, the lion cubs got their first vet check and they found out that there is one male and two females.

Here's a video I found of the two male pandas, Qin Qin and Xing Xing, who visited the Columbus Zoo back in the summer of 1992.

Also, as of mid-October we have had 1.57 million visitors. While I'm not sure if this is only for the zoo or the entire park I bet we can beat last year's record.

The Lion cubs debuted today. The male cub has been named Kitambi and the females Adia and Mekita.

The Associated Press: Ohio's zoo's lion cubs make debut

Also, the Bornean Sun Bear from Seattle, Edwina, has finally arrived and so has our male Red River Hog. We anticipate the Polar Bears to arrive within a month (yes, we are getting Aurora and Anana from Pittsburgh). Still no word on what male we will be receiving or when. The Brown Bear boys will also be in their new home by the end of the year. We also added a non-releasable Hawksbill Turtle to Manatee Coast recently.

I'm also proud to announce Columbus has once again become the only zoo to house a very rare and special species (but you'll have to wait to find out what it is).

Im surprised you guys are recieving Aurora and Anana, as did'nt hey go to Pittsburgh on a long-term loan in January?

My guess for the male polar bear would have to be Hudson at Brookfield Zoo

Good to hear of the other arrivals and debuts (Who is the red river hog and where is he from?)

I was very surprised when I learned we were getting the girls from Pittsburgh because, like you, I thought they were there long term but from day one Pittsburgh knew they were only holding the girls so Toledo can breed again. As for the male, Hudson is the only available male and he is not related to any Polar Bears in the US (his father is from Adelaide) so I would assume we will receive him but the SSP has yet to make a decision.

The Red River Hog is Harold and he is from SD (I think SDWAP).
