Columbus Zoo and Aquarium Columbus Zoo Updates for 2009

Actually, pinnipeds were in the original plans but they got scrapped permanently. We would add either caribou, who were also scrapped, or a bird exhibit with swans or Snowy Owls. We could also transplant some of our NA animals over there: Bald Eagle, Wolverine, Timber Wolf, Alaskan Moose. Oh well, African Savannah will be way more exciting!

Is there any African species that will definitely be exhibited in the new african plains exhibit as of now?

The few species I guarantee that the Savannah will have include: African Lion, Black Rhino, Giraffe (Probably Reticulated), and Zebra (Probably Grant's). Other species that will most likely be included (and have never been removed from the plans) Hippo, Hunting Dog, Cheetah, Nile Croc, Eland, Lechwe, Waterbuck, Sitatunga, and Elephants (Recently added Back in Plans). There will also be a dozen more species in the region that they have not specified (Birds, Canrivores, Antelope). Also there will be a train ride and a Paddlewheel Boat ride (May or May Not Keep the Proposed Rides). Given the scope of the land - 70 acres and the amount of species (estimated at around two dozen, probably more with at least one hundred specimens) this will be the largest and most ambitious region we have ever built. It shouldn't be anything short of remarkable.

Thanks for the info!

I am sure it will be a fantastic exhibit.

Any thoughts on/indication of breeding of the black rhino again at Columbus Zoo? One calf in so many years seems a little ... few?

Any chance for hyenas in the new African region? I asked before but couldn't find a response. They're one of my favorites and seem to be a little underrepresented in the US, but maybe that's just me.

That stinks. I always enjoyed seeing the drills at columbus and last time I saw them was this past summer. Considering how few there are in U.S. zoos it is a little disappointing to know they will be no longer be exhibited at columbus.

Your loss is our gain. Drills have reappeared in the UK in the last few years, but only at two locations, Port Lympne & Edinburgh- where the two Columbus females are going to go. These two groups are the first to be seen in the Uk for about forty years. There are three main founder bases in European zoos- Hanover, Stuttgart & Barcelona but few unrelated animals.

Black Rhino Breeding: Our keepers want restart breeding once Klyde goes somewhere else. A few years ago he was supposed to go to London but that fell through. Our capacity is four, so we might try breeding even if Klyde is still here. I'm not sure if we have a recommendation or not.

Hyenas: I would love to have hyenas in African Savannah and it is very possible that we will. I've seen them on one or two plans - and the newest argument for keeping some species is that they are keystone species. Well, hyenas are a keystone species so chances are good.

In Europe we would be jumping up and down for an unrelated bull Eastern black rhino (michaeli ssp.)! I know several zoos would benefit from the experience Klyde can bring to their zoo. He will be 7 this year, so approaching sexual maturity in a bull ...!

Drills: Columbus 1.2
Detroit 2.0
San Diego 0.1
Atlanta 1.6
Lincoln Park 1.1

Tiger Quoll: Columbus 1.0

@loxodonta - the Omaha quoll is the male at Columbus right now. In fact he is the lone tiger quoll in the US, we just lost our female.

Thanks for letting me know. I wasn't sure if he was still at Omaha or not. Is he on display at Columbus? Do you know if San Diego's drill is on exhibit or not?

Yes our male quoll is on exhibit in our Nocturnal House. However he is four years old so if you want to see him - I'd step on it, they only live a few years.

The female drill is not on exhibit at San Diego. She is also aging so she will not go on exhibit, or to another zoo.

ColumbusZoo001,

Thank you so much for giving us all the scoop. :)

I sometimes take the little NA train ride and I've noticed some large nesting boxes behind some of the exhibits that appear to have birds of prey in them. What's the story? Any plans to get some of those beautiful birds in an exhibit?

Karen

They used to house birds of prey for show staff but they aren't in use and currently do not house any birds. Most of those raptors have moved to the Bird Room at the Pavilion or to Promotions. The raptors that used to be in there can be seen in the weathering yard outside the Pavilion during the summer. In fact, some of them will be featured in the new animal show that debuts this summer. It will replace the old bird show and is rumored to have over 100 animals in the show.

Any plans as to what the zoo will do with the lion enclosure and black rhino exhibits near the Asia Quest area and in the Elephant Building when the savannah is constructed? Some Indian rhinos perhaps? Maybe some canids or hyenas in the lion enclosure? It will be interesting to see how the zoo organizes itself once all of the great new biomes are completed. The dominoes could fall into place very nicely if that entire area became striclty Asian species. Dholes "cough, cough", striped hyenas, "cough, cough", tapirs, "cough, cough". :)
