I heard today we will probably get Nikita and Talini. It would be wondeful to get all three because by the time they got here all of them would be sexually mature and none of them are related.

Quick Update

Here's a quick update on the collection - not too much has happened in the last two weeks.

1) We have our new Red Crowned Crane - she is an SSP surplus female named Darla. The intro went perfectly and Darla wont leave Mrs. Khan alone.
2) Our Mandrill intro is going great as well. Jezebel (the new female) has been introduced to our pregnant female Kumi and we are about to introduce her to Charley and Saba. We have also extended Kumi's due date to the end of May.
3) No news on the arrival of our male Red River Hog.
4) The baby elephant's name will be announced on May 10. He currently weighs around 370 lbs.
5) Finally I have uploaded a few photos of Polar Frontier construction. We are well underway thanks to constant 80 degree weather.

Is there still a voting contest for the baby elephant name? I know the site is all 'took a little longer than expected'?

Yes, they should narrow it down to the final three names in a few days and then people will be able to vote until Mother's Day.

I just received another few updates and some of these are major!
1) Klyde (our seven year old Black Rhino) will probably be going to Cincy very soon!
2) We have acquired a breeding pair of Brush Tailed Bettongs, who will be exhibited in the Roadhouse. We are now one of seven US zoos to house the species.
3) Plans are in the works for the acquisition of more Tiger Quolls by fall. Wags (our surviving male) is doing very well off exhibit.
4) We have seen breeding activity between Fishing Cats and will excavating Komodo Dragon eggs very soon.
5) An new Animal Encounters area is nearly constructed in Jungle Jack's Landing. This area will dedicated exclusively to visitor-animal interaction and will eventually be home to our pony ride (which we will relocate from My Barn to this area).

Is Columbus ever going to breed their Amur Tigers?

We actually will begin introductions this year. Right now we are working on some indoor renovations and as soon as that is complete we will begin intros. Cubs probably won't be until next year.

Any reason why? The unreliable ISIS states we don't have any black rhinos

This is great news! Any idea on where from?

And the Winning Name Is....

My lovely city of Columbus has again confirmed my view that the public is too ignorant as to even pick a name that means something. Our elephant has been named Beco (a combination of Phoebe and Coco). I understand that it is cute but I'm embarrassed to call him Beco, a name that means nothing. The keepers should have picked it like last time. WBNS 10TV : Zoo Unveils Name Of New Elephant - WBNS-10TV, Central Ohio's News Leader

I agree that Beco is a terrible name but IMO none of the final options were worth voting on.

Didn't see him today. They had red river hogs in the old black rhino area of RR. One of the areas was a rhino pen with only bar headed geese. Strange.

It's been like this since I've been in Cincinnati (December) at the very least. I feel like I read that Cincinnati is getting a young black rhino from Columbus, though I have no idea where they would be putting him with their present arrangement.

I know this is the wrong thread and I apologize. That said, I could see them putting the hogs in one of the smaller veldt yards, particularly where the geese are now. I imagine the rhinos could go back where they used to be in RR (where the hogs are now).

What are the unwashed masses thinking? I'm so embarassed... the other options at least meant something. I was hoping for Siddhartha, as Sid would be pronounceable enough by the average child. But BeCo? WTF? For a young bull who could quite possibly be one of the largest and most majestic in North America (he's already big, his brother went into musth way early and his daddy is a big guy), with an important breeding life in front of him? BECO???!!!!! Forget it. I'm calling him Sid. :P

Collection Update/Birth

1) Our female Brush Tailed Bettong came with a little surprise. We have a baby bettong!
2) Our mandrill continues to maintain her pregnancy.
3) Our seven year old bull rhino Kylde is still on schedule to go to Cincy.
4) Construction on Animal Encounters is almost complete and by the end of the month all the buildings for Polar Frontier will have been constructed. I'll post pictures later.

thanks for the updates on this amazing zoo. my question is how do you know so much about the columbus zoo? some of this seems like stuff they'd like to keep quiet but is very interesting to someone on the outside. keep up the updates.
