I have just noticed that Combe Martin Wildlife Park in Devon is advertising a new lion enclosure in there 2008 brochure! Does anyone know the origin of the lion/s kept or numbers? I presume they are African? Also if anyone has been there recently and seen the new lion enclosure i would be interested to know where in the park they have constructed it, and the type of design used?

Hmm sounds good. It's a great place in a really nice location, just needed a few more big exhibits I think (although I did visit about 3 years ago!).

And if modern zoo trends are anything to go by, I'm pretty sure they'll be Asian lions :)

I have been able to find out that combe martin now has three young african lion males, they are currently being displayed in the former snow leopard enclosure (apparantly both of the snow leopards have now died) untill a new enclosure can be constructed for them.

Do you know if Combe still have any of the Grey Langurs which I think came from ZSL.? They had about 4 at one time(sexes unknown but possibly all of one sex).

Would lions fit in the old snow leopard enclosure? Bit small, although suppose they won't be in there too long.

So, 3 male lions have arrived, are they from Linton Zoo, as i know they had a litter of 4, with 3 being male. The website says they intend to breed from the lions, so are females being brought in, or will some of the males eventually be shipped out?

I know lions are starting to become a conservation priority, what with Whipsnade going back into Africans having previously not planned to to do so, but is there any value in the recent spate of breedings of generic african lions in the UK? Not that I particularly rate Coombe Martin, but it does seem like a step backwards. Although, I hear there has been some change in either the managament or policy, and they have 'great plans' for the animal collection....in the early 90's they were advertising tiger and emu (!) exhibits as in the pipeline, instead opting a pair of snow leopards soon after they'd made those announcements.
