Highland Wildlife Park Confirmed!

At last after months of speculation it has been confirmed today by the RZSS that Mercedes the polar bear will be heading north to the HWP this year.
In the following statement it says a 4 acre enclosure will be built for her at the park.

The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) is delighted to reveal plans for a new polar bear enclosure at Highland Wildlife Park for Mercedes, who currently resides at Edinburgh Zoo. The proposed enclosure will be around four acres, making it the largest polar bear enclosure in Europe. The enclosure will have a large natural pool and will provide her with a natural tundra environment in a climate that is ideal for a polar bear.

Mercedes, the only polar bear in a UK zoo, has been in Edinburgh since 1984. She was rescued from her native Canada after she was scheduled to be shot. Unfortunately she began roaming into a nearby town in search of food and, as they are dangerous animals, this behaviour had to be discouraged. Initially, she was captured and the number ‘39’ was painted on her coat which allowed her to be tracked. On her third visit the decision was made to shoot her. Luckily, a local family became fond of her and asked RZSS to provide her with a new home. Mercedes, the car company, assisted with the costs of her transport, hence her name.

Iain Valentine, Director of Animals, Conservation and Education for RZSS, said:

“It has been our intention to move Mercedes for a couple of years now. She has been happy at Edinburgh Zoo and her existing enclosure is perfectly adequate but public perception has always been that they would like to see her in a larger enclosure. Originally we had to raise £300,000 to build her a suitable enclosure at Highland Wildlife Park. Thankfully, the Army has agreed to help us build the structures required and we now only need to raise an additional £75,000. If everything goes to plan, she will be in her new Highland home by the end of the year.”

Yay, that's good :)

Hopefully it does.
Hmmm, Polar bears back in zoos, elephants back in circusses, massive new enclosures... The UK's zoos are really starting to stop listening to Born Free lol :).

Does this mean that polar bears will have a future at Highland Wildlife Park, too?

I think so, the RZSS with finances being as they are, would not invest a lump of money into an enclosure that would be lived in for anything up to 10 years, i think Mercedes will be living alone in this new enclosure, until she dies.
Then i believe a young pair or group would be brought into to initiate a breeding programme.

I would love to see the plans for the enclosure, and also whereabouts in the park the enclosure will be situated, with the size of the enclosure and the possible moving of the wolves to Edinburgh it looks to be the site of the current European wolf enclosure.

In what is a relatively modest budget for such a large enclosure, i do not think we will be seeing underwater viewing, they will probably be a freshwater pool fed by the mountain streams up there, as with the tiger enclosure the bulk of the budget will be swallowed up by fencing.
Will be interesting to see if it is one large enclosure or separation facilities or even specific cubbing dens for the future.
Exciting times at the park:D:D

Maybe there will just be a basic enclosure for Mercedes, and when she dies they'll add cubbing dens, seperation enclosures and that.

I think with a 4-acre enclosure, I think it means they are serious about keeping (and possibly breeding polar bears). If it was just a retirement home for Mercedes, then i imagine they would've constructed a smaller (and cheaper) enclosure for the one animal rather than build one which a number of bears can live in.

And the HWP is the best possible location for a polar bear in the UK

this is fantastic news i bet she'll look fantastic in the highlands, i think it'll mean polar bears will be included in the future. although they'll may need cubbing dens and seperation facilities in the future i dont see the need for them to do it now :)

So will the zoo continue to keep polar bears as in the master plan?

They did have plans to, although I think they'd be better to leave them at the HWP.

Me too, the pictures of edinburgh's proposed enclosure looked rather small and with a lot of fake rock - HWP will be able to do a much better job and add another major draw-card to its collection.

Giant Pandas - Edinburgh
Polar Bears - HWP

Everyone's happy. Perhaps one day we'll see this combo at London/Whipsnade too...

Though I hope they don't move the wolves out and put polar bears there. They've always been an asset to the HWP, their enclosure being so fantastic.

It is fantastic news that Mercedes the polar bear will finally be moved to a much larger, more naturalistic enclosure, and the only downside is the fact that there might not be underwater viewing. The proposed 4 acres makes it the the largest of its kind in Europe, but I wonder if it will be the largest polar bear exhibit on the planet? The Detroit Zoo's brilliant Arctic Ring of Life is 4.5 acres, but that includes the foxes and seals as well.

I think the polar bears in Detroit get 2 acres over the 2 exhibits, however I think the Scandinavian wilidlife park has 6 acres for their polar bears.

I just looked on the Scandinavian wildlife park website and their polar bear park is 26,000m2 (6.4 acres). RZSS press office need to do their homework better!

It's great news though. Kudos to the HWP for doing a deal with the army again, they're getting a lot of big exhibits in a short space of time thanks to this relationship. I wonder what the soldiers prefer - building fences in Kingussie or frontline action in Helmand province

I wish Whipsnade would get Polar bears, they could build them a great enclosure in a relatively cool climate.
I think they would Leave Pandas for Regents park though ;)

Exactly what I mean. There's been recent rumours of London wanting to get pandas again, so if these smaller species' were kept in the city the larger polar bears could be kept in the chilly Chiltern Downs, creating a drawcard for each ZSL zoo.

Everyone wins :)

It hasn't been suggested yet, but my thought would be that Mercedes will live by herself in this new exhibit until death, and then be replaced with more suitable brown bears. It certainly was the intention of HWP to obtain browns again (previous held in the 70s?) when the park concentrated on natives.

unfortunatley this could be the case. i would personally much prefer seeing polar bears making a come back. perhaps it may depend on how well mercedes is doing and the visitors coming as a result, depending on this they may make the decision at a later date:confused:
