I think this belongs on the General zoo discussions page, but switch to another forum if needed.
Hi!
Most Zoos around the world have had the focus of conservation for at least 2 decades now, and that's a great thing.
Now what about freshwater species?
Well, freshwater fish such as endangered Pupfish, Cichlids, and even sturgeon have been kept in public places, despite not appearing as immediate crowd-drawers from my experiences.
Now, freshwater crustaceans have been getting the short end of the stick, and for a pretty self explanatory reason,
Interest is lacking.
Well, might I tell you that I'm starting a thread for that "lacking", interest, and I'm wanting some examples of threatened crustaceans in captivity.
Primarily crayfish.
Here's some examples that I found so far:
Feel free to tell me more about these
Nashville zoo keeps Bigclaw crayfish, a little studied species, but is threatened and native to the U.S.
Bristol zoo keeps the endangered European native White clawed crayfish, do these have a breeding program?
The vulnerable European noble crayfish is kept at the Dutch collection GaiaZOO Kerkrade, @KevinB has provided photos as well.
There's a first batch I can think of after browsing Zoochat for this thread, My goal is to conduct a list of every public Zoological collection who keeps endangered freshwater crustaceans, Primarily crayfish.
Discussion drives towards great things, so please, discuss!!!
