Contributing to zoos and charities

I've raised a significant amount for my local zoo (Chester) over the years, but having seen the amount of money they squander, I would never do it again, certainly not with their current "big business" culture.

It's also a sad indictment of the current state of affairs at Chester Zoo that instead of giving thanks to the supporters who raise money for them, they take the credit for themselves. Few charity workers expect to be recognised for their time and efforts, but seeing others take the plaudits really does kill enthusiasm.

Personally I now volunteer for the RSPB (rather than donate) as I can see where my efforts are being directed and their appreciation is far more genuine.

Although it's for each individual to choose, I wouldn't give another penny to Chester Zoo and always warn others to think long and hard before they invest any of their time and money there.

I'm one of Chester Zoo's small but beautifully formed :) bank of volunteers.

I take my own time away from my day to day career (my employers are great to be fair and will actually match up to 3 days volunteers work for free - so if I volunteer 3 days they will give me another 3 days to save my holidays) anyway.
I Volunteer because i like to get involved with the zoo in whatever way I can

I find the volunteer team and the zoo staff as a whole incredibly grateful and really appreciative of the time that we give them, the tasks we do mean that it frees up the staff to do other tasks on an ever growing list.

Whilst I don't seek acknowledgment for this work we are always thanked and respected for the time and help we give.
