Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens News 2023

Need to go back to Cotswolds soon, especially now the new lion house is completed.

Last time I went one of the enclosures in little Africa was empty, it used to house Neumann' Grass Rats, was this empty on your visit Lafone?

I hope they still have the Prevost's, they're a favourite of mine and a species we keep and breed in our home collection. Hopefully they are just redoing their enclosure, to be honest it wasn't the best space for them really.

Hi yes the enclosure in little Africa was still empty, I snapped a quick pic of the sign on it.

I also hope the squirrels are still there. There’s been a lot of new / reworked structures in the walled garden so hopefully they are getting the equivalent at that end of the park.

That would make sense! They'd look much better in the walled garden, I always thought that little enclosure they are currently in was quite strange. It worked better for the Polecats that lived in it before, if I remember correctly.

Sorry I meant the same new enclosure style / refresh as in the walled garden for the squirrel one, new framing and fencing and new housing areas in those. I do think they'd be better down there though! They do get a bit missed by lots of people where they are now. I hope they are just off show rather than moved on.

Ah I see, I misunderstood. Though yes I think they should be in the walled garden, they'd fit in well there.

Not meaning to boast; we had good success with our Prevost's so far this year with one litter of two females (homes found) and the female now looks pregnant again! So if someone from Cotswolds is reading this and actually needs some more, welcome to get in touch haha! :D

Cotswold breeds Giant Mexican leaf froglets:

An exciting achievement for Cotswold!

Zoo near Swindon becomes only the second in world to breed rare frogs

According to the Zoological Information Management System (ZIMS), Cotswold Wildlife Park is the only zoological collection in the world to have successfully bred Mexican Leaf Frogs in the last twelve months.

And it has become only the second collection in history to have achieved success in breeding these rare amphibians.

Went to Costwold last weekend. Few questions I'm sure someone on here will know.

What Rhinos are there now? There was the usual 4 (mum and babies) out in the paddock but there was 2 held inside. I know one of these is the usual Bull but had never seen the 6th one before?

Clouded Leopard were very active but could only see 2, maybe I'm wrong but I thought there was 3, is that still the case?

Also I saw someone mentioning the squirrels- they are off show, you can see them to the right of the emperor tamarin enclosure opposite Madagascar, so assuming they'll be going back on show when cage is ready.

Was 3 clouded leopards a few weeks ago not sure on the rhinos the squirrels probably go back on show soon think they are going to spruce up the enclosure

I always thought there was four Clouded Leopards? Mum, and her three cubs, although the cubs are nothing like cubs as they are a lot older now. Normally Mum is inside, and has access to the rear exhibit, whilst the other three have access to the main exhibit.

That is unless the female mother of all the cubs has since passed away ?

Yes its still four. Well it was when I last visited, hope nothing has happened.

Rhino wise I believe it is 6 now (one female having left), two adults, two calf / juveniles and one male. But happy to be corrected!

Had a good day at CWP today. The weather was warm and sunny in the afternoon. Lots of people visiting - felt a bit like a summers day though 330pm to closing it was pleasantly quiet. Made for a nice 30 mins in the tropical house with no one else there and the birds and potoroo all around.

The new binturongs Barry and Bennie were out and was lucky to see the whole family being fed so all six binturongs together in the enclosure feeding and playing. The two newest additions were climbing all over the enclosure - great to see. The zoo also announced them being out and about on their Facebook page on the 13th May in time for world Binturong day.

The lake is still closed off to the public. The tropical house is open.

There were a group of crested Guinea fowl roaming in the rhino enclosure and around the area at the rear of little Africa which was nice to see.

The black and white ruffled lemurs are back in the enclosure in the Madagascar area.

Lots of new white stork arrivals - five of the nest platforms had chicks of different ages. Great to see another breeding success this year. All the other platforms have storks sitting so more to come and looks like another bumper year for the park and white stork release project. Such a visit highlight.

The new lion house now has its new signage installed. Very smart. Will put some phone pics of the new area in the gallery. The improved aviary in the walled garden where the glossy starlings were appears nearly complete.

Some building work going on in the shop area redoing the front near the covered bench space which faces the car park.

Took a visit to the Cotswold Wildlife Park yesterday and like most early summers, there has been another huge baby boom!

As well as the above mentioned Binturong's, who are very adorable, there is a young Ring-Tailed Lemur named Charles, a Bamboo Lemur who was born on Friday, around 11/12 Prairie Dogs who look no more than a couple of weeks old, some Parma wallaby Joey's, and two baby Gundi in the cafe.

There was also a mention that a Camel had been born over the weekend, but was not on view, and in the Rhino talk, it was said they were expecting the birth of a Rhino in the next couple of weeks.

The Victoria Crowned Pigeons and Nicobar Pigeons were both on nests in the Tropical House as well.

As you come out the Tropical House, you will find the Green Aracari, where the two young chicks born earlier in the year, are back in the main exhibit, and very showy and playful!

The two young Pallas Cats born last year, are due to leave the collection at some point in the near future, to join a UK zoo that doesn't currently hold the species.

Also, the what was empty exhibit in Little Africa, now houses a second group of dwarf mongoose and there are still 4 Clouded Leopards, with the 3 siblings all very showy yesterday, and could see Mum indoors.

Here are a couple of photos of some of the babies / juveniles

Lovely day out at Cotswold today although pretty hot the gardens are looking great!

The new young camel was out in the paddock with the others which was great to see.

The lake has reopened so you can now complete the loop past the wolves and it was excellent to see all the birds back out. Lots of ducklings and moorhen chicks too from the ‘visitor’ residents. I really enjoy spending time at the lake so it was a treat to have it accessible again.

There are now blue crowned laughing thrushes in the corner aviary near the otters where the kookabura and then the masked lapwing were before. Picture of the new sign attached.

Interesting happenings in wolf wood too where two new wolves have arrived after CWP did a swap with Longleat to send the male over there for breeding. Two three year old sisters are now in residence (as of last Thursday) and they were spending quite a bit of time in the enclosure outside the house at the back getting used to their surroundings and all the people on foot! They look lovely and look forward to seeing them out and about as they settle in.

The empty exhibit in little Africa was empty again and the squirrels are still signed off show.

The laughing thrushes near the cotton tops are sitting on the nest still - perhaps there might be more chicks to come this year.

That's exciting news about the Pallas Cats, I wonder where they will be going? It will be brilliant to have them at another UK collection.

By the way your photos of the Pallas Cat and Clouded Leopard are absolutely stunning!

Thank you. I do know where they are going, but it's not my position to say where, as was told in confidence, but it's to a UK collection that hasn't held them before.

Is this the one on the left before you get to the doors to the outside part? If so last week there was Dwarf Mongoose in there, but not signed. Or were there no sign of them in there, or was it a different exhibit?

Great news about the Lake and the Wolves, and Camel :) Lake wasn't open on Tuesday, so it's nice it's open again now :)
