Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens News 2023

Off to my first ever first to CWP on Thursday, main reason is to see the 2 baby rhinos , any idea if they are outside at all during the day have noticed others have said they were inside when they visited.

They have been rotating them into the paddock. I have missed them outside so far but even if inside you should get great views.

When I visited last week they were initially outside. Later on they were indoors.

i have a pic of a pair of Great Indian hornbills at Chester from 04 11 2017 but only have a single bird there after

Had my first ever vist to CWP the other day and have to say its without doubt the best value for money zoo I've been to, just £16.50 each is a bargain for what is an amazing collection( not sure if it's always that price).
Has an amazing mix of animals and birds in what on the whole are in very nice enclosures.
Highlights needless to say the baby rhinos who we saw both outside and later inside, the lions were very active first thing and only thing we didn't see were the armadillos.
Set in beautiful grounds I will definitely be returning at least once a year despite a bit of drive to get there.
Only slight negative is I don't understand why they don't extend the small giraffe enclosure they have so much space right next door to it or even better mix the zebra in one big enclosure.
Also seeing the albino bushbaby was an added bonus and a first for us.

Glad that CWP made such a good impression, I agree it really is a beautiful place. As this website is a place of learning, I must respectfully point out that birds are animals

We visited CWP twice last week while in the area on holiday and must agree with the comments from sparkes it has a great variety of animals including Pallas’s cat which is the only place that we have seen them.
We was lucky enough to have good views of the female with 2 adult cubs as well as the male , had to wait a while for them to come out from the back but was worth it
Also great to see the 2 White rhino calf’s , they have a lot of space and was lucky enough to see them running around
Staff were so friendly and knowledgeable especially the keeper in the Lemur walk through area

edit to add also saw the Greater Bamboo lemur with a young one, it’s great to see them having breeding success with such a rare lemur

Up at CWP today in the brilliant Autumn sunshine. Not a cloud in the sky. Chilly. Excellent all round. Expected it to be really busy but it was not crowded at all.

Much enjoyed my first look at the new young rhinos outside - they were in the enclosure all morning with their mothers and the male. Loads of play fighting and the cows were also very active. It’s an iconic view of rhinos anyway but with baby rhinos even better.

The sunshine (particularly after the recent heavy rain) made for some super active animals.

One of the capybara now mixed in with the Mara and anteaters in the enclosure at the entrance to the lake / wolf area, opposite the tapirs.

A few young flamingoes were out that I hadn’t spotted in the lake area previously.

Also lovely to see a new coppery titi infant in the walled garden. Looked very recent. Another good breeding success after the titi youngster last year.

A couple of super fluffy fledglings in the weaver enclosure too which was great to see. All good additions to the excellent breeding record for CWP in 2023.

CWP announced via social media that they are building a new Pallas’s cat enclosure and the cats are now off show. Poppy and Peter the kittens were also due for moves so it’ll be interesting to see the residents when the new enclosure opens and whether it is Penelope and Tull the adults back together again.

While it’ll be a shame not to see them for a bit (not sure about anyone else but they are the opening time place to start a visit for me!) it’s a welcome change as the old enclosure was looking a bit weary.

This should be a great new development for the cats and another new CWP development after the lion house and the improved aviaries in the walled garden and all the new pathways and walls about the place. Looking forward to seeing how they progress. Good news all round.

Great news. Nice for them to have an enclosure designed for them rather as opposed to an adapted aviary.

If they are now off show I presume that means they are demolishing the existing enclosure and building the new one in the same place.

Enclosure was already demolished when I visited on Monday. With it all roped off and lots of diggers.

Should be cool when it’s done - there is some room at the back of it to extend into and depending on what they do with the bushes right and left it’s a good sized potential space.

Enjoyable day at CWP today - sunny and cold - very quiet visitor wise which made for some lovely moments.

Having seen the Chapman’s zebra mare getting larger it was lovely to see the new foal today. Looks like a filly and very pretty. Mum was a bit lame but keepers were in attendance.

The Pallas’s cat enclosure has been flattened as mentioned above (with the old concrete edges and a few of the rocks inside the only things left) and the old sheds behind the enclosure have also gone opening up the space. Lots of room for the new enclosure it may even be possible to have views from two sides with how it is opened up at the moment. Added a couple of photos to the gallery.

In the lemur talk it was mentioned the crowned sifaka have been showing some interest in breeding and keepers have installed a new camera in the house to keep an eye on them. Could be interesting times! Also mentioned was the forming of a second greater bamboo lemur group who are housed behind the colobus. They aren’t signed but you can see them in the outside house from the path between the colobus house and the burrowing owls - added a photo to the gallery so people can find it. The main group are still in the enclosure in the walkthrough.

The recent coppery titi infant was playing about inside and venturing off the adults which was nice to see.

Lots of active animals elsewhere including the clouded leopards (to my surprise). The lake was busy with active pelicans and waterfowl.

A perfectly quiet tropical house (no one else came in for over 30 mins) meant everything was out including the potoroo attempting to make little potoroos on the path. Two turacos were also flying about landing near and the sloth woke up and went overhead. One of those little moments you can sometimes get when the zoo is quiet.

Forgot to add all the work going on in the gardens - the team work hard to make the gardens super enjoyable and it’s always a seasonal landmark to see all the Autumn activity going on.

Unless I’m mistaken I thought it was a father and son sifaka

I thought the same and didn’t think they had a female but just stating what was said in the talk (someone asked about the sifakas specifically). zootierliste appears to suggest 1.1. Researching previous information though suggested they are both males.

Mailed the zoo about the Sifakas and they kindly confirmed

“We have a male sifaka who is named Yosi and he is 6 years old. We also have a female sifaka named Soa and she is 4 years old”.

So perhaps we might see more small Sifakas at CWP to add to their excellent previous success.

Any idea where Yosi was born? Soa was born in Besancon.
